I had never been one to pick a line and aim for that line. I usually just aimed at the pin and just went for it.

Lately, I have been picking my line and spotting a divot, a broken tee, or soemthing within a few feet from where I tee up and aiming at that for better accuracy. When I've been hitting pure shots, they almost always seem to be a dead pull. Not a hook or draw in any way, but a straight pull.

I feel as though I have a neutral grip (maybe even a little weak if anything) and my alignment is good. For the life of me I can't figure out why I would be dead pulling the ball. I think I deloft my irons a bit. I'm not sure if that plays into it.

Can anyone let me know what factors come into pulling shots, so that I can watch out for the them the next time I'm at the range please?

Since I can't see your swing who knows.

I know I hit dead left pulls (I am RH) pure sometimes. Usually the cause is swinging too hard/fast which makes me rotate my shoulders early.

I have video of me using my driver, but do not have one of my irons yet. Do you think it would help to attach the driver video? I think my driver swing may be a little different than my irons though.

What do you mean by swinging too hard/fast? Are you talking about trying to swing out of your shoes? If that's the case, I don't think I do that. A lot of my shots that I pull are 50% or 75% wedge shots.

If its mostly with your wedges, my guess would be you are coming over the top with sholders.

I have a similar problem too sometimes - my most solid shots are the "over the top" pulls as well.

Brief description of "OVER THE TOP" swing...Very Common BTW, so don't feel like your in a minority or you have a real bad swing or something:

"When something is described as "over THE TOP," the phrase generally refers to an action or comment that's so excessive that it appears ridiculous. The over-the-top move in the golf swing can be thought of in the same way. It's an exaggerated motion that leads to ridiculous results. Specifically, a player comes over the top when the arms are swung in a circular motion away from the body as the transition is made from the top of the backswing to the start of the downswing, as in the photo below. The club takes an out-to-in swing path approaching the ball, resulting in a pull or slice, depending on whether the clubface is closed, square or open to that path at impact."

CG, thanks for the explanation on what the over the top was. The link you sent though was a little confusing. It keeps referencing pictures but there aren't any in the link. I am having a hard time following the verbage as to what the drills are. Would you have the video of the 3 drills in the article on hand so that I can see what the fix is?

this can maybe help. Try to check out a few of these videos. I guess seeing the fix visually could help a bit more than just reading about it...

Thanks! I took a quick look at one of the videos and will look at the rest tomorrow morning at work. : )

Like I said earlier, I have a video of me using my driver (video taken from behind me). Can you PM me your email, so that I can send it to you to see if I do the same with my driver? I sometimes pull my driver, but lately, it's been either straight or a slight fade (starting 10 yards of the target line and coming back).

Yeah, you can if you really want to, but I am not a swing expert to be honest man. You'd be much better off going to the guys at the "Swing Check" here on The Sand Trap. It's free of charge and someone who is a highly skilled player and knows more about breaking down the golf swing will be able to give you better detail on what to do.

Check it out here: http://thesandtrap.com/swing_check/i...video_analysis

Well the Swing Check requires much more than what I have now. I will compile some and send it in for analysis. I'd like some help in the interim.

yeah, I think your coming over the top just slightly which can cause those pulls. But, it doesn't seem to be too major and certainly fixable. Just make sure you work on the over-the-top drills in those youtube video's to fix it.

Also, with the irons you may be coming more over the top than with the driver, so if you can get a 8 iron swing up that would be a bit more helpful.

You have a good swing for a 20 handicap though, that's for sure.

Thanks for the help. I'll take a look at the youtube videos and hopefully get a chance to get out to the range after work tomorrow. If I can get someone to come with me to the range, I will ask them to get more videos of me. Not only with 8 iron, but with PW, as well as the side angle.

I feel like I had been a little worn down (sloppier) when hitting the drive in the video, seeing as it was at the end of my set. I will take more video of it when I am just warmed up. One thing I'm also feeling is that even though I get my hips turning before my arms are dropping on the downswing, it still feels/looks like, at least to me, that it is a lot more of an arm swing and that it is more rounded. Did you happen to notice that in the video at all? Any idea of making it a more comprehensive swing?

if its your irons and your coming over the top make sure you getting a full hip turn on the backswing and shift your weight to the other side before swinging, it gives yourself enough room in your swing to come slightly outside on the back swing (sqaure), to inside (sqaure).
