Hello everyone I'm new to the forums and to golf. I only played like twice and been to the range like another 4 or 5 times in my life. I'm quite young still in my 20's so just starting to pick the game up. I was wondering what type of irons are good for a beginner like me? I really don't want to dish out like 800-1000 dollars on some brand new clubs that I'm only going to use just a few times a month if that. I wouldn't even mind some decent used ones seeing I don't have a huge amount of time to hit the range or to actually play 9 or 18 hole game. I'm willing to spend about 300-400 bucks (it's not much I know) but I'm just not committed to spending a bunch of money on some real expensive clubs especially when I'm just starting out. Thanks in advance for the help guys/gals.

Edit: I'm 6' tall, right handed and looking only for only a set of irons preferably 3-9 PW, SW and probably even a GW too. Thanks!

I would keep away from the Wilson Ultra complete bag deal, instead check the Adams golf tight lies complete bag, should be better.

If you're just looking for irons, also check the Ben Hogan BH-5 irons, for less than $200 new. These are based on the Callaway X-14s and the X-14s are pretty damn good.

There are different sets of Adams and Nickent irons out there on rock bottom golf as well, check them out.

You really can't go wrong with these:

goto globalgolf.com and look for used Taylormade R7 irons they have them on there for like 275 they're perfect beginner irons, I as well started again this year, and my neighbor got me these irons for $150 and they are very very good.

Look into Wilson iron sets if an iron set is what you want. They are really cheap. I got mine brand new with Golf Pride Grips for 125$. You can probably find a good set of Wilson's for under 150 and spend the rest on other golf equipment that you may need.

I have the R7s and I love them. They aren't just beginner irons, either. If you do end up playing more you wouldn't have/need/want to "upgrade" like you would with some of the starter clubs.

I would highly recommend the Ben Hogan BH-5 irons. You can find them on Ebay for just over $100, 3-PW. These are great for beginners because they are forgiving and solid, and you'll be able to play these for a long time. One suggestion, maybe purchase a 3 wood. You could both tee off with it and use it from the fairway if needed. Might be a little easier to hit than a driver, too...

    • Ok, I'm trying to find a feel to hit a consistent ball flight (irons).  My current predicament.  1. I try to do the arms down stuff better, with the club feeling like it is way behind me more. It's just a cluster of results. Most of the time, I can't get any speed on the swing. If I get my arms down faster, I just throw them out.  2. I focus all my attention on turning better. Pushing off with my left leg and getting my right side through better. On the DTL view, this doesn't produce anywhere close where the hands and club should be. The result is usually ball first contact, lower ball flight, more centered contact.  At this point, I am going with option 2. Stop thinking about what the hands do. Just make a shorter backswing, keep it wide, turn through. Somehow, the club head finds the ball. My focus is so much on just making sure I turn, it's like, "Oh, that contact was better.... Oh, that bell flight looks playable." If not, I will just be practicing my entire summer.
    • Nope, they spent too much money. They are in over 28 million on the football roster and related NIL compensation at this point. Boosters associated with any Texas college football team has HUGE sway. The AD is between a rock and a hard place. They put a lot of money into Sorsby, at the chance of winning a NC this year. If you move on, you basically wasted a lot.  This is why Ohio State wants 3 QB's they feel can start. That is why the backups the past 5 years at some point transfer. Texas Tech has no backup near the quality of Sorsby. If they move on, they are screwed for 2026.
    • Maybe there's something I still don't understand about the situation. Wouldn't Texas Tech do itself a favor to move on from Sorsby at this point?
    • Day 281 6-10 Full swing, fast, getting low point ahead of "towel".  Working on flow during this seems to help.
