how do you hit the ball correctly when hitting from a downhill lie? its annoying me so much! we have a par 5 (the 3rd) where there is a ditch running about 50 yards from the green and i am not the longest of hitters so i lay up every time! the only problem is i havent been thinking about my lay up the last 5/10 times ive played the hole and ive been leaving myself on a downhill lie every time (not just a tiny bit downhill but pretty steep), so i get up there and for the last few rounds ive then duffed my 3rd shot into the ditch and always taken 7 or 8! it annoys me so much as i hate hitting a good drive and lay-up and still walking off annoyed with myself!

Take practice swings on the hill to determine where your club will bottom out and hit the ground. Play the ball in that spot relative to your stance. Basically, the steeper the hill, the farther back in your stance you should play the ball.

I feel your pain.

My home course has a par 5 (Pine View #7) that has a very generous fairway, however I love driving down the left side where there are numerous rolling mounds.

If I'm lucky I'll land on an upslope on these mounds where I can absolutely launch a 3 wood...sometimes the lie will even allow driver to be used. It is super cool watching the ball soar off these mounds and float towards the green.

This is, of course, with a good bit of luck on the drive. There is an equal chance that it will land on a downslope. In these situations I simply play it as a 3-shot par 5.

When dealing with downhill lies, I try to always set up and take a full speed practice swing or even two. I generally play the ball further back in my stance and use a more lofted club. My goal is for solid contact and maintaining my stance/balance more than aggresive swinging.

I'm wide open for suggestions.

First step is to get your shoulders parrallel to the slope if at all possible, then treat it as a flat lie, swinging along your shoulders with your normal swing. The only other change I usually make is to play the ball back in my stance a little bit. When you get your shoulders level with ground this becomes a much easier shot. It will still come off a little lower, so it might be necessary to club down a bit, but that's something you'll usually figure out more from experience than someone telling you.

Ugh, I struggled with this yesterday a bit. I just don't think through the shot thoroughly and end up taking the same club that I normally would for that distance. It was 9 iron disance on a steep hill and I hit a 9 iron(dummy!), ball came out very low, ended up over the green. Looking back I probably should have hit SW.

What a tough shot. The ideas above are spot on. The only thing I have to add is taking a smaller backswing and keeping it short. It is so easy to hit it fat. I also open the stance and club face to help get the ball up. Just a tiny bit. A really hard shot for sure.

get your shoulders parallel with the ground and then play the ball back in your stance. How far back in your stance typically is determined by the steepness of the hill. Your ball is typically in line with your spine. As you adjust your shoulders to be parallel with the ground your spine angle moves. Make sure your ball position moves in relation to the movement of your spine angle.

There was a tidbit about these shots on the golf fix a few weeks ago. It is probably on the golf fix website if there is one.

Basically, the steeper the hill, the farther back in your stance you should play the ball.

Michael Breed disagrees with you: he says for downhill shots the ball should be farther forward in your stance.

After thinking about it, and trying it out, I agree with him. More information here: http://thesandtrap.com/forum/showthread.php?t=26105

I've tried both ways, and I get mixed results with each.

My problem with forward is that I get more height, but I tend to hit it heavy...almost always. I usually make a better pure strike in the middle or back of my stance, but then I get no height on the ball and it's like a line drive, LOL. Either way, I think you have to stick with a method and whatever works for you go with it.

I think it works like this.

If you maintain the same spine angle relative to pure vertical on a downslope, moving the ball back works.

If you maintain the same spine angle relative to the ground beneath your feet, moving the ball forward works.

It all depends on where your sternum is... and I've personally had more success lately with the latter.

    • I appreciate the 👍 from @Rulesman, one reason I post these updates is to open myself for constructive criticism from more knowledgeable or experienced people.  Another reason is so that other folks might learn from my experiences, and his questions bring up an important point.  Rule 16.1 is pretty clear, you must have interference with your stance or area of intended swing to be allowed free relief.  But the existence of interference is much less easily defined.  It can depend on the location of the ball and the Abnormal Course Condition, the terrain and vegetation around the area, the direction of play, the type of shot that might be reasonably intended, and the skill of the player.  You don't get relief when the interference only exists when the player's intended shot is "clearly unreasonable".  I needed to evaluate all of these criteria under the watchful eye of the PGA professional who would have preferred to take relief from a pretty gnarly lie.  They say doing rules official work is hours of boredom interrupted by moments of intense pressure.
    • I would vote no also. The way I heard the story is that Pete most definitely did gamble on baseball as a player. He gambled so much that he got himself in deep with the mob. Then as a manager he'd tip off certain people to whom he owned money each day as to how the pitcher looked warming up, if there was some stiffness in the elbow that wasn't reported. Or if certain hitters were out late, had the flu, or what ever. That was his way of paying off his debts to the mob.  There are supposedly phone call records which were made from the managers desk when he was the manager of the Reds, and/or the Expose and where ever he was in the visiting team locker room. This is supposedly some of the evidence against Pete.  On a side note. I think Pete missed a real opportunity. It was always my thought that he handled everything totally wrong. I think he should have come out right away and said "I did it." ... "I made huge mistakes and it ruined my life. Both financially and in terms of the stress it put on me." I think he could have been booked on speaking tours telling the world about the perils of addiction in general and gambling addiction specifically. I think he'd of been cast in much more sympathetic light. Possibly even turned into a hero again. America loves a redemption story. Instead he tried to deny everything and spend money on lawyers to keep information from coming out. I thought at the time and still think now that he played the cards he had terribly. Perhaps that was part of the reason he owned so much money gambling. 🤷‍♂️
    • Glad to hear you're sufficiently mended to start swinging again! As Bette Davis said "getting old is not for sissies". I I'll check in with you via PM or text in a few weeks and hopefully we can get out at NKGC this year!
    • I started doing slow swings again. I’ve had a rough year since last June. Hurt my left SI joint and took the better part of 9 months rehabbing it. Then I got a repeat hernia last December. I had repair surgery 4 weeks ago and now can start with slow swings. I’ve only played three times since the outing last June and only the last one without any back pain as the back finally has healed. I have to take it slow with the hernia because the golf swing can put a lot of stress on that area. I am able to work out again too since the surgery, which helps. Started Monday with just backswing work with 6 iron and driver. Today, more of the same with some slow chippy swing with 6 iron and driver. Focus of the practice is from my last GEARS session. Setup: Feel like I’m on my toes almost falling toward the ball. Arms hand down vertically and feel like I’m almost too close to the ball. Backswing: The idea is to keep my hip center from moving toward the ball. I need to feel like I’m swaying back a bit on the takeaway, but in reality, push my right hip back toward the wall 45 degrees behind me to P3. From P3-4, start moving toward the target. Downswing: Hands feel like they start dropping straight down from the top. Left leg pushes the left hip back and up.  Did backswing feels first then slow 25% swings. About 10 balls each with rehearsal feels. It will be a fews week before I can really do full swings, but this practice may help reset things and remove old bad habits. I’ll try to film when I have a chance.
