Man 'o War is my favorite range/pro shop/place for lessons. Their lesson setup is great. I took one from Tyrus last year and want to see Brad in the very near future.

Nah. Hope on 75 and you can be there in about an hour and 15 minutes. :)

I've been to Brad a couple times and Tennye once. Brad is a great instructor. Really has a way for simplifying things when he explains it. Bob is great with club fitting/repair if you need any work done. He's fitted me for a driver and putter this year and just altered my putter some more last week.

I've been considering going to top golf in Alexandria Virginia but it was just a pretty far drive. I might have to drop by based on the review. Looks fun.

Are you related to Tom Sizemore? Not the actor but a dude in his late 30's that now lives in the Ville?

Nope.

Top Golf sounds cool with their computer monitors that tell you distance and where you ball landed on the green. Man O' War golf isn't anywhere near that advanced.

Wow, I can't believe one of the places I play appeared on the list. Knight's Play in Apex, NC. I don't really care too much for the driving range, but I do like the 27 hole par 3 course.

The driving range slopes down and then up, flags are marked off at various intervals and updated based on which mat you're hitting from. The landing area near the flag resembles a green but I wouldn't call it a "realistic target".

What I do like that I haven't seen at any of our other driving ranges around here is a practice sandtrap. It's set off to the end of the range and about 10 feet from a nice green with flag. Their putting green has small spiked flags you can stick whereever you want, but I think I'd prefer an actual hole.

I don't get the fascination with going over the top with amenities at driving ranges - the place I go to is about as simple as you can get (it's like the driving range that Tin Cup runs without being in the middle of the desert), available grass tees (I never use the astroturf tees - they screw you up more than anything) a double-wide for an office, about 30 year old distance markers with a few flags here and there, and $4 for a large bucket of range balls that you'd pay $10 or more for at any of the places listed in Golf Digest.

The only thing I worry about it making good swings, making good contact, and covering my targets - the rest of the stuff is just a distraction IMO.

I agree with you if I were just looking for a place to hit balls. An open field would work for me, I really don't care. With Man O' War golf (can't speak for the others in the list) they not only have a huge range, but also two putting greens that are well taken care of and roll smooth, a couple short game greens surrounded by bunkers, bunkers to practice long iron shots out of, indoor practice areas where they can video analyze your swing, etc and some of the best golf pros in the state to work with you should you need the help. I only hit balls at the range about half the time. The other half is spent working on short game, so I look for those extras because of that.

I think any range that has mats should be disqualified from the list. Mats suck moose nuts!

It's difficult to hit off of the grass when it's covered by an inch of ice and snow.

We all don't have the luxury of Jacksonville weather... although I'd move there in a heartbeat if I could get my wife to move. I plan on going to the range through the winter at least once a week. Their mats are located in heated stalls so unless it drops below 40 degrees, it's quite comfortable hitting balls from there. Although I hate hitting off mats (and never do it in the summer) I hate not swinging for four month more than I hate the the mats.

That's funny...Knight's play is 5 minutes away from my house...I was there today. It's pretty nice, the driving range is big. I never really thought it would make a list like this though.

    • Ok, I'm trying to find a feel to hit a consistent ball flight (irons).  My current predicament.  1. I try to do the arms down stuff better, with the club feeling like it is way behind me more. It's just a cluster of results. Most of the time, I can't get any speed on the swing. If I get my arms down faster, I just throw them out.  2. I focus all my attention on turning better. Pushing off with my left leg and getting my right side through better. On the DTL view, this doesn't produce anywhere close where the hands and club should be. The result is usually ball first contact, lower ball flight, more centered contact.  At this point, I am going with option 2. Stop thinking about what the hands do. Just make a shorter backswing, keep it wide, turn through. Somehow, the club head finds the ball. My focus is so much on just making sure I turn, it's like, "Oh, that contact was better.... Oh, that bell flight looks playable." If not, I will just be practicing my entire summer.
    • Nope, they spent too much money. They are in over 28 million on the football roster and related NIL compensation at this point. Boosters associated with any Texas college football team has HUGE sway. The AD is between a rock and a hard place. They put a lot of money into Sorsby, at the chance of winning a NC this year. If you move on, you basically wasted a lot.  This is why Ohio State wants 3 QB's they feel can start. That is why the backups the past 5 years at some point transfer. Texas Tech has no backup near the quality of Sorsby. If they move on, they are screwed for 2026.
    • Maybe there's something I still don't understand about the situation. Wouldn't Texas Tech do itself a favor to move on from Sorsby at this point?
    • Day 281 6-10 Full swing, fast, getting low point ahead of "towel".  Working on flow during this seems to help.
