keep you head behind the ball. Also check your shaft at address, if its too far forward you may be delofting the club

you are not making solid contact but hitting the top of the ball and making contact with the lower grooves of your iron.

most likely you are hitting on the upswing of your golf swing and not before the bottom of the arc in your golf swing.

1) draw a circle on a piece of paper
2) put a dot on the bottom of the arc
3) image the dot as your ball
4) your iron has to hit the ball before the bottom of the arc
5) you are hitting the ball after the bottom of the arc and on the upswing
6) causing you to hit thin and hit line drives

a) check your ball position
b) make sure you are not swaying back on your backswing
c) take a video of your golf swing

Intentionally chunk one. Make divots in your practice swings. Whatever you need to do to get into the habit of getting under the ball more.

Can't think of how you "give 'em more lift", but if make pure contact with them they will get up nicely.

I keep it simple with irons....long irons, short irons, wedges....I play them all the same.....drive down into and through the ball. I take a hefty divot forward of the ball.

My main golfing buddy (6hcp.) almost "picks 'em clean"....somehow....I can't even think of doing that.

Hit down on those irons and accelerate through the ball.

good advice! you should always feel confident with your practice swing before hitting the ball!

I'd like to add a few additional tips.

1) If you're trying to swing hard/forcing the shot, your left arm might buckle out & up, breaking down the triangle made between your two arms while in the hitting zone. This subconscious lifting up action lifts the club head up and causes topped/skulled shots.

2) Look at 1:07 to 1:08 on the attached Youtube video. This shows how the club head swings down into the ball. Notice how his hands are slightly ahead of the ball when the club enters the beginning of the hitting zone (where the club is horizontal.) A proper release will allow a swing path that descends. It may not be necessary to steepen your downswing. During the release, make sure that your left hand/arm rolls under as you swing through the ball so that you're rotating the club head down to the ball while squaring it up to the target.

See the following ->VIDEO for how to allow your hands to move through the release and impact zone.

thanks 4 the vid

    • Day 197 (15 Nov 24) - Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management.  Solid round of 83 (41/42) - 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.
    • Have been on a mid to low 80’s roll of late - today was no different with an 83 (41 front / 42 back).   Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management, delivering 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.  Local course starting to get that winter feel - wet areas wetter, thin grass thinner, greens  trickier.
