Well iam sure everybody has a opnion as which club to buy, but i was at a friends house today, and for weeks he's been telling me to buy a Good set, Well when i told him i had the ok to purchase a set, he was trying to get me to buy a set of old Ping stiff shafts, that looked like they were well used. I said i thought you said buy a Nice New set, and he said these are? Now that i got the go ahead he does'nt want me to buy a better set of irons then him, Plus i said i want to get fitted, he said you really dont need to be fitted, they'll just try and sell you a more expense set of Irons? Man iam confused Now? Aim going down to be fitted friday, and take a look at what they have anyways.

Where are you going for a fitting? Are you really a 36 handicap? What are you playing with now? have you hit any sets of irons yet? have you looked around online to see what is out there yet? What is your budget? Finally, what questions do you have for the rest of us?

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

Your friend doesn't sound like all that great of a "friend". It sounds to me like he's trying to pick up some cash at your expense.

If you're going to buy some new clubs you owe it to yourself to buy something decent. Brand doesn't matter a lot as long as you're getting some quality components. Taylor Made, Callaway, Cleveland, Ping etc all may solid equipment. The good news is that the economy sucks and there are all kinds of deals out there. Please take the time to go to a golf shop and get a basic fitting done. Swing speed, length and lie angle should take care of the basics. You'll want a set with a lot of forgiveness. High MOI and lots of perimeter weighting will help you develop your swing and hit straighter shots. Until you've played enough so that you can produce a repeatable swing don't worry about the uber expensive stuff out there. Here's an example I pulled from Golf Galaxy that would get you off to a great start: http://www.golfgalaxy.com/galaxy/pro...ffset=1&s;_id=0

Look at "game improvement" irons and with that budget you will have no problem finding a decent set. Maybe even mixed hybrid iron set.

You probably won't need an established handicap to join a league. Typically if you're joining for for the first time they will use your actual scores from your first three rounds to determine your handicap.

picking a set of irons is as much about personal preference as it is about finding what works best for you. Hit everything you can put in your hands. Golf Galaxy is a great place as they will help you hit every iron in the shop regardless of weather its brand new or not.

Maltby defines golf clubs based on a playability factor. In general if you struggle with good consistent ball striking, I would look at clubs in the ultra game improvement model. These clubs will be the easiest to hit, the easiest to get the ball airborne, but generally will have the least amount of workability, and little if any feel. http://www.ralphmaltby.com/home/362 this will give you some ideas, but once again go to the store and hit ALOT of clubs, and trust the sales people to help you select the right irons. Also, consider used clubs. If you find a brand you like, you can always ask us, often times companies change models yearly, so the previous model will be available at a discount and will probably offer very similar characteristics. feel free to post in this thread with any questions and everybody here will try to answer them.

After months of research...let me recommend the Ben Hogan BH-5 Offset. This is the same club as the Callaway X-14. Spend the 199.00 or less for these and then spend the rest of the money on lessons.

I love mine.

    • Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.
    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
