hey y'all,

Wifey and i are looking for vacation ideas for the week after thanksgiving. (we always travel this week since it is the slowest travel week of the year.)

Here are the criteria.

- Warm weather; doesn't need to be hot but at least 70s
- Top quality golf. Duh
- Top spa options

let me know any ideas. especially if they aren't the traditional ones. we've done scottsdale several times and really don't want to go back there.

Southern California?

San Diego area maybe, or Palm Springs? Both would have everything you are looking for.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

In Texas, your best bet for good weather week after Thanksgiving would be South Padre Island area. It could be 90 or 40 degrees that time of year until you get south of San Antonio.

Here is the top ranked spa http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev...and_Texas.html

The best resort in the area is http://www.peninsulaislandresort.com/
Week after Thanksgiving--you will likely have the hotel/resort to yourself.

The best resorts in Texas are further north--if you are willing to play golf in the 50s or 60s, La Cantera in San Antonio would be a good choice. http://www.westinlacantera.com/

The other options for that time of year (continental US) would include the following:
Florida: Orlando; Tampa; or Miami/Fort Lauderdale areas
and the afformentioned Sourthern California, PHX/Tuscon

some great options have been listed. my favorite is palm springs. we go there every year in february for a week. great weather, location and exceptional golf. even a casino or two.
my wife and i are going to st petersburg fl the week you are talking about after thankgiving. we will play golf a few times while we are there. there are some pretty good courses around tampa, st pete/clearwater down to sarasota. we always have good weather that time of the year. 75 to 80 degrees.

Here in San Diego is a delightful time of year around Thanksgiving. Decent availability of flights in & out, and great variety of golf. Since you said "top quality" for both golf and spa I assume you're willing to spend a little money, so here are some ideas:

a) Stay at Torrey Pines Lodge - top quality hotel, nice but not too large spa, and they get some tee times at Torrey Pines.

b) Stay at the Four Seasons Aviara in Carlsbad, just north of San Diego. Very nice course, great spa, and a nice course. And of course play Torrey while there, only about 25 minutes away.

c) Stay at La Costa resort, also in Carlsbad. Good courses (the North is the better; used to be used for Accenture World Match Play events), top notch spa, great tennis facilities. And play Torrey.

d) Stay at Rancho Bernardo Inn about 20 minutes north of San Diego. Decent course (not as good as the others, but good proximity to a number of other courses), nice spa, usually has some good deals on golf & spa packages. Has a great restaurant, one of the best in the San Diego area.

While in San Diego, also make sure you play Maderas - great course, well conditioned, like a nice private club.

Another good option is a little up the coast in Orange County at the Pelican Hill Resort in Newport Beach. They just did a big remodel, and it is very posh with a couple excellent courses, world class spa, and good proximity to a lot of other courses.

I've been to Costa Rica twice. Great people, beautiful country. So much to see and do in Costa Rica.

Here is the best resort in Guanacaste (30 minutes from the airport in Liberia)
Arnold Palmer golf course, great spa.

    • Day 51 (yesterday was 50, not 59 -- that was a typo).  I didn't have a ton of time today.  I hit a dozen balls with a 6-iron in my practice room.   Amazingly, after this I did the ShotScope analysis of yesterday's round;  my approach play was at the 5 hcp level.  That's pretty darn good, but unfortunately for my score, some of that came from hitting a few good recovery shots.  But I also hit some really good approach shots that weren't from trouble!

    • Day 295 6-26 Low point control with towel again. Getting better but not swinging fast enough tonight.
    • Shot a 37 today! Palmer Course, PGA National. Really fun. 6/9 GIR, no lost balls. The double and the bogey were both three putts from like 35 feet or so.  The birdie at the last was really fun. I stood over that fifteen footer and thought wow I’m really about to make this, aren’t I? And I hearted it. Really fun. It’s like 9000 degrees outside but I battled through it well. Good times.
    • I had been in a bit of a slump for the month of June. Handicap index has slowly risen, and there were few sub-80 scores. Today was a different story at Leslie Park GC. Lots of solid shots, GIR's, up & downs, for a 77 (7.8 differential). As with most rounds, there were a few loose shots and crappy putts, but it was a good day.
