so i finally got a d3 with the same shaft my 905r had, at 76g v2.

i can only recall 2 or 3 straight drives in the past 36 holes i have played. My default shot with 905r was dead straight or a slight fade. with the d3, i am fading quite a bit harder. the 905r shaft was 44.5 and my new d3 is 45". I choked down for a while to try to simulate the shorter shaft, but that doesn't do it. It is HEAVIER. at least that is how i feel. i have tried to work on my balance and adjust, but i can't seem to make it work. Now i love the higher moi of the d3, i just haven't dialed it in.

should i get a 65g shaft like the diamana? those are ez to find.

also, how hard is it to switch shafts with this new 909 series? thinking of just buying a diamana d3 on ebay so i can try both at the same time.

btw, the d3 is long for me, even with a fade :) had a few 300 yd drives

any advice welcome

Erik

I haven't bought a new driver in several years but I love to try the demo clubs out when I can. One thing I have always noticed was that even with the same shaft, the head alone can make a difference. Meaning that you can't just use your old set up with a new club and expect it to work right away, each club and shaft combination will be different. Sometimes you have to tinker with the ball position and tee height until you find that one set up that works.

I guess my point is that if you haven't had it for very long, take it to the range with a bucket of balls and play around with the set up to see it you can straighten it out. It might just be that you need to place the ball an inch more forward or towards the back or tee it up a fraction higher to get the most out of the club.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

Yeah I've been to the range. Obviously I could use a lesson and some swing changes, but I'd like to get the club feeling lighter if possible. I did change to a lighter grip already.

does it feel like the club is heavier or the head is heavier? I ask because changing to a lighter grip will change the swing weight (all though its really just fooling the scale)

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

Rather than play the shaft roulette, why not go get fitted? With the new 909 fitting cart from Titleist, you can try nearly every shaft Titleist offers in a matter of 45 minutes or so (shafts/heads are interchangeable). That's if there's a club fitter in your years of course.

Yes I think I am to that point. Thanks for the suggestion.

That about sums it up. But I would add that I have heard from here and at my club some other players that are gaming the 909's that their 905 were a more consistant club. I'm sure it's related to getting the configuration right so get it checked out.

The extra .5" could be making a difference as well you may have a harder time squaring up the face even if you choke up. Everyone else is right though, go get fitted. It's the only way you'll know for sure.

Same here. Have a buddy who went from the 905R to 909D2 and he hits his 905R much better.

I also switched from the 905 to the D3, and i havent noticed any significant consistancy differences. They are both a half degree open, which is fine for me. I like the feel of the 909 more than the 905, as well. My issue with the D3 is the voodoo stock shaft, i really should have gotten fitted first. Ive been planning to get it sent back and have a 73g V2 installed, but i keep putting it off.

Yeah the Voodoo shaft gave me great numbers on the Trackman when I got fitted but when I demoed it at the range (instead of a net) the ball flight was terrible. I ended up going with the Matrix XCon6 in my D3 but am getting ready to switch to the UST Axivcore Tour Black.

or you could do like me and not get fitted and go through 3 shafts!! haha!
the "tour vans" must not like Canada...and half the shope here are as knowldegeable as a fricken doorknob

i recently put in a GD Aura RED shaft
havent tried it yet, but it is one SEXY lookin shaft man (god that statement should never be used again in the same sentence......sorry)

i need a very low ball flight (due to a 13+ launch angle)
this shaft has a good weight, decnet torque numbers and was the prefect price point ($75 USD shipped to me)
and i think Natalie Gulbis games GD shafts!!haha!

the D3 is what i WANTED this year, but just couldnt pull the trigger on the price tag

My 909's a better driver than my 907 ever was, which was a whole lot better than my 905. I didn't like the 905 at all - I played the R7 425 TP or the FT-3 when the 905R was out.

Same with me, I had the 905R for about 1 month. I never hit it well and ended up dumping it for a Callaway FT-5. I liked the 907 decently enough but i LOVE the 909.

The feel is far superior to anything I've played since the 975D (man that was a long time ago).

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
