I've been whacking at some sticks in stores, lately, as I'm looking into upgrading my noob set irons. I have a set of Slazenger Wrath irons... which actually aren't too bad.

However, they feel like a box on a stick. They're modeled a bit like the Nike 4D Slingshots and in spite of my newbitude I've been gravitating toward some slimmer sticks.

Of the batch I've managed to find in lefty demos so far, my favorite by far was a Mizuno MP-25 I tried out at Ed Watts. Felt great, and the launch monitor had me adding about fifteen yards with greater consistency than anything else I tried.

Sales Guy said they were kind of between 'Players' irons and the 'Super-High Improvement' irons, but they seem to be a bit tougher to find than expected, AND I'd like to browse around some other brands with a similar look/feel.

What other iron sets are in this range?

the MX-25 and MX200 are similar clubs.

ALso, check out the Callaway X series (X22 are the current, X16, x18, and X20 are the previous models)

The taylormade burner irons are widely well liked and have a similar look

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

Same here. Love 'em. ($450 or so....fitted to you).

Take a look at some of the Taylor Made Burner and R7 irons. You can get the 2007-2008 versions for huge savings.....around $400 or less (new). A buddy of mine bought a set of MX-200 Mizunos a month ago and is loving them....a bit more $$$$, though.

I just went from playing Mizuno MX-23 to the new 09 TM Burner, the feel is completely different but the TM is way more forgiving.

I would say the biggest thing when gettin a new set is being realistic...... you need to be realistic about your skill level, there is way too much new technology to help you improve your game not to take advantage of it! Dont pay any attention to launch monitors, most of them are far from accurate, besides, hitting off a turf matt is nothing like hitting off true grass! So DEMO.... DEMO.....DEMO!!!!

I think Watts was closing out their stock of G5's. Had about 20 box sets of irons going for 350 or so.

X20s and X22s are worth a try. Most come with a Uniflex shaft (metal), which was designed for range of swing speeds, from regular to light-stiff shaft needs. Both are popular clubs, and you should have no trouble finding sets in either Uniflex or upgrade graphite shafts. (Graphites cost a little more.)

My X20s are reasonably forgiving clubs, but I can still draw and fade if I want to.

X22 models first hit the golf shops this winter, so prices are good on both new and slightly used X20 sets.

Focus, connect and follow through!

I think Watts was closing out their stock of G5's. Had about 20 box sets of irons going for 350 or so.

Keep in mind that you can also be fitted and order the PING G5's for the same price. Your fitter may recomend a different type (not just flex) shaft for you than what's in the boxed sets you've seen. Get 'em to your length, lie and loft specs. Also, you get to select among any of their grips....this alone is worth the 10 day delievery wait.

PING is really a super company that will make them exactly the way you want. If you decide to add a club to your set later (say...another wedge or long iron) just go to your PING dealer and let them get the serial number off one of your irons....the new club will match the specs exactly. Good luck....buying new sticks can be intimidating, at best.

I have tried the Pings (G5, G15, i15) and the Taylormade (Burners, r7 CGB MAX)

I am still deciding what to get ERRRR

Honestly I would just suggest to swing them all AND yes the X series are some very nice clubs (brother-n-law plays them) I would grab a Ping, TM, and Callaway and swing away!!!!!

you will decide pretty fast

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
