I've been toying with the idea of reshafting my 3-wood with graphite. It's a Titleist 980F with a stiff steel shaft. At first, I was just going to get a new one, but I can't find a 3 wood that looks as good at address.

My question is, do you think it's a good idea to go ahead and put a graphite shaft in it, and if so, which one? I do hit it pretty solid as is, but I would like to get some more distance out of it. On the really long par 5s I can't hit in two with irons, the distance I currently get out of it prevents me from going for the green.

Titleist 980F 15 degrees (stiff)
Adams a4 hybrid 19 degrees (stiff)

Its fine to reshaft them as long as the person that is doing the work knows what they are doing and can align the 'spine' in the shaft.. i would think about these criteria: how stiff do you want it? stiff? xstiff? if you want to hit it higher you need a low kick point shaft and if you want to hit it lower with a flatter trajectory you want a shaft with a kickpoint in the middle to high up area. there are tons of shafts to choose from its just about finding the one that matches up with what you want in a shaft. there is a wide range of shafts listed and described on the titleist webpage. maybe look there for which shaft suits you. also, as far as a club that looks great at address, the 909f3 squares up nicely to the ball; just a sidenote.

Like he ^ said, there's a lot out there to choose from, and some are definitely going to suit you better than others. I recently swapped in a UST ProForce V2 on my Dymo 3W, and I'm very happy. The shaft feels stable all throughout my swing, and I recommend it to anyone looking for a new shaft.

Easy to do, but your clubfitter is going to have to fool around a bit to get the same swing weight, since presumably your steel shaft now is at least 100 grams and you'll be looking at 75-85 grams max in graphite with a 3-wood. And if you don't want to make the shaft longer than your current steel shaft, then it could get a bit tricky.

    • That's interesting. I think it depends on which arm you use to lean the shaft forward.  If you predominantly use your leading (left) arm to "pull" the shaft forward (do this by putting your left wrist into flexion), then the face appears to be closed.  Instead, if you use your trailing (right arm) to "push" the shaft forward (do this by supinating your right forearm), then the face does appear open.
    • For many, that will open the face. So, no. It's not universally true.
    • Day 581 - 2026-05-05 Spent an interesting 90 minutes on GEARS Hybrid. Prioritization is important.
    • Day 255 5-5 Getting arm off chest in backswing and downswing. Starting to make a bit of progress. Recorded  and hit foam balls.
    • Day 2, May 5 2026.  I went to putt today;  my usual make-24 drill.  Scored a 35 from 4' and 58 from 6'.   Those scores both beat the bogey player baseline;  I wish I had numbers for something between a scratch golfer and a 90-golfer available for me (I might be able to infer them from ShotScope?).   Either way, I'm happy with that performance.  From 4', 3 coins came up on the second pass and another 3 on the third.  One of these days I might make 12 in a row, which is something I'd like to see 🙂
