How many putts can you have per 18 that you consider acceptable?

I rather have 30 putts regardless of how many greens I hit, that only means that I have one putts.

You'd rather hit 5 greens and have 30 putts than hit 15 and have 35 putts?! Not me. I'll take the 5 strokes lower on the scorecard that the latter results in over the 5 fewer putts, but higher score of the former every time.

Really, what if u hit 18 GIR? You wouldnt be happy with an even par round???

Of course I would be happy with an even par round but I doubt I will ever hit 18 greens in a row. If I am ever able to accomplish it I surely hope that I don't miss every single birdie putt.

I normally am around 30-35 putts (usually bad putter), but have been practicing a lot lately.

Last time out, I had 15 putts on the front, and 12 on the back. many of these putts saved double or triple bogeys, and helped me finish with a pb of 90.

as it's already been said... if you get under 30 putts in a round, you're doing pretty good. i typically clock in 31-33 putts per round, which i can deal with, but i'd love to shave two or three of those off and regularly get 29-31.

30 putts is great for me. Even if I do my usual miss a ton of greens routine, I will score as long as there are no blow ups.

I've never really valued counting putts unless there is some context to it. A man faced with a lot of chips from the fringe will count far fewer putts, than a better player hitting more greens leaving himself 20 feet putts.

It may take more effort but knowing how often you miss 5, 10, 15, 20 feet would be really useful.

Is there a green you often three putt on?

Do you have more than one three putt in a given round?

What is your ratio of getting up and down from the fringe, 10, 20, 50, 100 yards.

I don't happen to record all these statistics but simple reflection should reveal significant patterns and where you must practice.

My last round out I shot a 91 with 32 putts. That's the lowest putt total I've ever had. I'm usually around 38. I shot a 90 with 38 putts on the same course two months ago. The 91 I had 3 GIRs, the 90 round I had 6 GIRs. Looking at my Scorecard stats, the reason I only had 32 putts was because my approach shots were either short or sided, so I chipped up onto the green, leaving my initial putt far closer.

Having said that, I think putt total is important for me because I can put into context. True, I didn't do better than the 90 but I could have had my chipping been better. I should have put my chips closer to the hole and only 1 putted. This tells me my chipping needs improvement as well.

    • Day 121: did a bit of mirror work with my driver. Working on shortening the backswing.
    • Day 305 - Grip and backswing work. Full swings were bothering the hip a bit.
    • Day 56 - 2024-11-15 Light day. Lots of catch-up work. Checked the grip to make sure I wasn't compensating there, and did a little backswing work.
    • Day 197 (15 Nov 24) - Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management.  Solid round of 83 (41/42) - 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.
    • Have been on a mid to low 80’s roll of late - today was no different with an 83 (41 front / 42 back).   Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management, delivering 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.  Local course starting to get that winter feel - wet areas wetter, thin grass thinner, greens  trickier.
