I was in a fund raiser charity event for St. Jude's hospital and when I arrived I was under the impression it was a best ball event (best score of the foursome gets placed on the card) We found out when we arrived it was a better ball (scramble format) meaning you all hit from the best previous shot.

My question is, do you like playing in scrambles? I do like the team aspect of it. THe fact that your team can PICK you up when you have a bad shot. I also like the commerity of it, because everybody was for the most part together on the course and it was more of a social function.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

I've played in a few, but don't seem to play my best golf in scrambles. I do enjoy them once in a while though. Usually a layed back event!

Yes, very much so. I play in about 4 of them a year (work related) with a few friends. We have a really fun time.

I especially like for format because you can try ultra high risk shots. If someone in the group already made an amazing shot you can drop and try and make a more amazing shot.

In general it's a very relaxing way to play. You can absolutly suck and have a good time.

But, it comes down to the people you're with and how much beer you have.

For the sheer fun of it, I love the scramble format. It gives you a chance to try some shots you wouldn't otherwise dare, and it speeds up pace play. Occasionally, if I'm playing in a 4some and we're pressed for time we play a 2 on 2 scramble at my home course.

Hate 'em.

Better than not playing golf at all, but just barely.

QFT. I enjoy a scramble every once in awhile, but overall i try to aviod them. They're monotonous, IMO. Two ball or best ball are team games i can get into.

I like scrambles. I think they are fun to play and you get to do things that you wouldn't normally do. Especially the holes that I wouldn't dare hit driver when playing my own ball, but with the scramble you get to grip and rip and see what happens. Anytime you can write down a score in the 50's is a good time.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

I enjoy playing scrambles simply for fun and hanging out with friends. I play in a bout 6 or 7 scramble events each year and am in a 2 man scramble league. However, I prefer playing my own ball as I do in my other league. Another fun format is Money Ball/Lone Ranger/Red Ball .

Nice change up and fun. Especially if you like the people you're playing with. Can get pretty exciting.

Would never want to play it regularly though.

I used to like them when I didn't really golf, because I could go out and hit my 50 yard drives and not ruin anyone's day. Now they just produce bad habits and I have to go out the next day to rebuild my mental game.

Hate 'em.

I play in 2 a year- both charity events. You can buy mulligans and buy a length of string by the foot for gimmes. Typically the team that cheats the best wins.

Weapons of choice:
Irons/wedges: Titleist Tour Grind

Just for your information, Best ball and better ball are the same thing, only with a different number of players. Better ball is with 2 player teams, and best ball is with 3 or more. It's just a grammar thing, not a different type of play. Neither one is a scramble... scramble is always a scramble. Scrambles are ok occasionally for the social aspect as long as the plyers realize the if there are other players on the course, then the scramble still has to keep moving. My course hosted a scramble for a local Knights of Columbus outing last week, and they bogged down the course to the tune of just shy of 3 hours for the front 9, and 5:45 for 18. All they wanted to do was screw around and guzzle beer. I fielded numerous irate calls from the general public playing behind them. The head pro told them to find another place to play next year.... we will not host them again. The trouble with such outings is that the organizers don't seem to understand that they need to set up some ground rules and that groups are still required to maintain a decent pace of play or they will be asked to pick up.

They are lots of fun. However, I often question the validity of the winning score.

I played in one early this summer The team that finished second place (none of whom have ever broken 80 in their lives) was apparently, "putting the lights out". They shot 10 under par and lost by 3 strokes to another group of hacking cheaters (or is it cheating hackers).

Anyway, my group consisted of me, my wife, some dude who also plays off 10 and his wife who hits it short, but down the middle, all day long. We shot even par - great score for us considering the format - and we had a blast. Cheaters suck, but in the end it's just a good way to weed out which people never to trust with your investments.

another variation:

Yellow ball (not like that money ball) rotating on each shot, or each hole. YOu play a yellow ball. Each player takes his turn hitting the yellow ball (or takes there hole) if the round ends and the yellow ball is turned in you get -2 on your score.

as for the 2 man scramble, thats a nice way to do it. We have also played 6 hole 2 man scramble. IN other words you get a new partner every 6 holes and each man is in the end out for himself.

FOr instance we have played, $10 per guy. 18 holes, each 6 hole section is played with a different partner (you could play better ball or 2 man scramble, or combined score) and each set of 6 holes is worth $2, and the best 18 is worth $4.

some golf clubs

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

i'll play them, but i'm not a huge fan. it's good for a little variety every now and then, i guess. the newspaper i work for has a yearly 4-man scramble that i've played twice, but frankly, i can't stand 4-man scramble. talk about taking forever to finish 18 holes...

How do you know they were cheating? With 4 people hitting each shot, it is not unreasonable to have a score of 10 under for 18.

    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
    • Day 128 12-18 Worked on rotation and getting to lead side. Still working on the flow feeling while doing that. Recorded swings.
    • IMO-the only thing entertaining was the relay race. Everything else was excruciatingly boring...or just  stupid, like the 14-club thing. Watching guys blade wedges into the water over and over is not at all interesting.
