Ok... so i was playing the other day, and was 3 over through 11. I pull out my six iron, then bam, nothing but ground, ball goes 100 yards, and i'm trying to get up and down on a par 3 from 105 yards out.

what do you guys do to ensure this doesn't happen? it seems like late in the round, i kind of lose my rhythm and start doing bad things, which result in shots like this. how do i keep fatigue, or otherwise, from ruining my round.

i'm a walker, btw, and my home course is fairly long, so that definitely comes into play.

SOunds to me you were worried about maintaining your score than focusing on your swing. I have done that a lot lately, I have been shooting relatively well and then all of a sudden I forget how to play golf.To fix this, I try to maintain the same thought process during every shot, regardless of score, hole, next shot, or previous shot.

On another note are you are lunging forward with your hips late in the round vs turning your hips, causing the duff?

hmm... i don't think i'm lunging my hips, but i could be. thanks for that advice. it seems as though i have been concentrating on the score rather than the shot lately. especially when playing with a group, i'm pretty competitive and want to be the low man.

I certainly don't want to preach but I believe that physical conditioning and nutrition have a lot to do with late round fatigue, etc. I have no idea what your level of fitness is but I'm in my late 30s and have made a concerted effort over the past several years to improve my overall fitness level and it has made all the difference in the world. I experienced exactly what you mention above several years ago but today I feel like I haven't hit my playing peak yet.

yeah, you're right. i haven't been eating well lately, nor doing yoga like i have been the past few years. i do walk about two rounds a week with 50 lbs. of clubs on my back, but i guess that's not going to cut it. but it seems like i don't have time to both work out and practice golf every day. it's either or. and i don't even have kids!

You could just be lifting your head too quick. I do that on occassion.

Same goes for me. The only other reason I do that is when I dont pay attention to my position on the ball, and I stand a little too close to it, but usually it's because I'm pulling up and out too aggressively.

I find when I'm tired playing a round i over-swing a lot.I take a huge back-swing
which causes me to dip towards the ball resulting in a fattish shot.I try to remember not too force the shot.

    • Day 121: did a bit of mirror work with my driver. Working on shortening the backswing.
    • Day 305 - Grip and backswing work. Full swings were bothering the hip a bit.
    • Day 56 - 2024-11-15 Light day. Lots of catch-up work. Checked the grip to make sure I wasn't compensating there, and did a little backswing work.
    • Day 197 (15 Nov 24) - Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management.  Solid round of 83 (41/42) - 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.
    • Have been on a mid to low 80’s roll of late - today was no different with an 83 (41 front / 42 back).   Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management, delivering 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.  Local course starting to get that winter feel - wet areas wetter, thin grass thinner, greens  trickier.
