Hi,
After reading the latest 'golf digest' article on the advantages of golf club fitting I've got a question to throw out there and i hope this subject hasn't been discussed...sorry if it has.
I live in the Midlands in the U.K. only about 15 mins from the Belfry which boasts a great academy and huge fitting center with 10 different manufacturers. My main question is this...how? if i want say a new set of irons do i choose which manufacturer to visit for my fitting. All the top manufacturers have 2, 3 or 4 different models in there range all of which will slightly differ from each other be it with technology or just the 'look' of the club. If i went to Callaway and got fitted how do i know that my real perfect fitted iron isn't sat on the shelf in the Taylor made fitting suite or the Ping fitting suite etc.... Its 50 pound to be fitted for any of the manufacturers if you don't purchase the clubs so its a lot of money to lay out to try them all. Also I'm sure all the different manufactures fitters will tell me that there technology is best.

One other thing if i go to a local range and try the different makes of irons i wont get a true reflection of the club because they wont be fitted to my requirements.

I'm really keen on getting fitted as I'm sure it will improve my game. So any comments on this would help.

Thanks in advance.

Do the 10 manufacturers let you demo the clubs? Or is it only if your getting fitted that you can use them?

Can you demo the clubs some place else? I would suggest going through a demo and deciding what clubs you want and then be fitted if that is possible.

This is the problem everyone has when they want to take golf seriously. They always want the best equipment that fits themselves. As you can see, this itself can be a big problem.

#1 thing is it takes patience. Do you research before you walk in the golf and try out all different type of clubs. "what is your clubs objective, go high? go low? go straight? go far?" "what kinda shaft are you looking for, graphite or steel?" etc. It would be best to look at golf digest HOT LIST for your best choices. *note: please get a club that fits your handicap. Dont ask for blades if your handicap is 29 etc. You know yourself the most.

#2 After picking out several brands, hopefully 2-4, hit them on the simulator or the range. Which club acquires your objective? But more importantly, which one feels better and gives you more confidence? (i think that is the most important factor). Distance isnt always everything.

#3 After you pick, get fitted for length, grip size, and lie.

#4 before you buy, ask for another person (who is knowledgeable in golf, preferably a club fitter if that club is right for you). Purchase and buy.

Dont always assume that golf shop workers always know what they are talking about. I mean some shops they are very insightful and knowledgeable, but in some, they just high school kids trying to make more money for their car. Do your research first if you want to maximize your spending. Once you make your decision stick to it, you are most likely gonna upgrade again in 4-5 years, depending on your game. Dont make this seem like you are adopting a child. Just have fun, research, and dont buy out of faith!

I am not saying that fitting wouldnt be beneficial, BUT..I just cant justify the cost involved
i have never been fit for clubs...14 years golfing and never even crossed my mind

I think anyone above a 9 hcp should concentrate on playing more, practicing more, getting lessons etc. before spending a dime ona fitting

I could pull out my wife's clubs or a 7 pce. rental and spank most of my buddies (and thier buddies) w their own gear

a proper lesson and practice will go MUCH further than a "fitting" IMO
you dont have to spend a pile of cash on gear or fittings, to be "good" at this game

But for most people, standard clubs fit them. If a person is 6'3 with big hands, its like trying to hit a junior set clubs. or if you short 5'3 its like trying to hit a longer iron set. Lie also affects your game too, I believe (not sure) if your lie is flat when it needs to be up right, you would be hooking it more. If your lie is upright when it needs to flat you will slice more. Mainly because the way you will drag either your heel or toe of your sole when you make divots.

Like i said, try to imagine hitting a junior set and taking lessons with it. That will really mess up your swing and impact.
