For anyone into golf history, this book is a "must read". Vardon's perspective on the trend of the game at that time was very simular to how some feel today. In that time frame golf was switching from the gutta-percha (solid rubber) ball to the Haskell (rubber core) ball. According to Vardon the Haskell flew further and made the game much easier to play, much like some view today's modern equipment with 460cc drivers and multi-layered balls.
