You may be referring to the times when a player finds himself not having reached the green in regulation and must get an up and down for par.

Not finding the green in regulation and getting par or better on the hole. Doesn't matter if you're in the rough, fringe or bunker.

"He's scrambling well today", means a player is missing a lot of greens, but playing well around and on the greens so he still manage to score par or better.

okay. So what it means is that is you have say a 25% GIR, you would like atleast a 50% scramble recovery?

You would always want 100%. If you miss 33% of the greens, which would be 6 greens and get up and down 3 times, you have a 50% scramble recovery. If you get it up and down 6/6 times, you have a 100% scramble recovery. This is of course depending on the severity of your misses, your shortgame and putting. Keeping record of it is a way to track your progress in the shortgame.

Okay, I see now. My last time out, I was 50% fairway, 28% GIR, 50% sand save, 1/2, and like 10% scramble. Is this kind of average for most golfers? I had 36 putts, : (, but i still shot an 89. For right now, thats pretty good for me unfortunately, but I should easily be in the low 80's to high 70's.

It sounds like your short game needs work. Hitting 28%- 5 greens in regulation should yield 5 pars minimum, but for a good player 4-5 genuine birdie chances. 36 putts is reasonable in theory if you hit 18 GIR though you would still expect some 1 putts. But if you miss your GIR you are essentially meant to scramble. You miss 72% GIR, I would work off the basis that you should have taken 26-28 putts in that round. Of the 13 greens you have missed you've played the chip/bunker shot but taken 2 putts far too many times. Obviously some shots from off the green are harder than others, but if you have a short to medium range chip the goal is to get it in the hole or real close.

    • Day 37: did my drill swings in the garage with foam balls for about 15 minutes. Working on getting my backswing more turned and then going from there.
    • Thanks but honestly… I don't know any other way. I don't mind being wrong so long as I know where to go from there. I don't like being wrong — I'd love to get things right (which is different than "being right"). I recommend grabbing a furniture slider or a paper plate or something, and doing something like this: First, make a swing where you let your trail foot swing out as you turn, then twist that foot back in. From DL and FO, it'll look like this: Then, during a regular backswing, try to twist your foot in slightly (demonstrated in the left image): You'll notice a crease along the trail side of your hip, your pelvis will "fold" into that thigh (internal rotation of the hip joint), and your "bits" will be squished a little between your pelvis and your thigh. Ben Hogan said once: "At the top of the back swing the groin muscle on the inside of your rt [sic] leg near your right nut will tighten," Hogan wrote. "This subtle feeling of tightness there tells you that you have made the correct move back from the ball." I don't know about that, but you will probably feel something down around that area.
    • Yep. I think it will start to feel even more athletic when we start on the downswing stuff later.  I know, it's just I want to be younger so I have more time to enjoy the changes. 🙂
    • I need to drop a couple of stone. 🙂 😛    Yep. Yeah, but in the end, it feels more athletic, like you're actually using your legs, yeah? As you know… we use the best available info we have. Like others, I was fooled a little by 2D images for awhile (moving or still). Unlike others, I've learned and grown and moved on since then, while they're still looking at their images (often from lousy camera angles).
