I've been working lately ok getting better with my hybrid and I'm getting better every day. I know you're supposed to hit a hybrid like an iron... but I find I'm positioning the ball like I would my 3 wood (directly off the inside of my left heal). If I were to position this like I would a 3 iron, the ball position would be about 2 inches off the inside of my left heal.

If I position the ball like I would when hitting a 3 iron, I almost always push the ball. But if I move the ball further up in my stance it goes straight. The problem with putting the ball that far forward in my stance is that I'm no longer hitting down on the ball (I'm hitting it more like a wood/driver).

So... is moving the ball up to the inside of my leading foot okay? Or do I need to change something in my swing? If it's my swing, I can only assume that I'm not releasing my wrist's soon enough in my downswing (thereby leaving the face of the club open on impact).

Moving the ball up on the tee box, you'll get away with that ok. If you're doing it from the short grass, you're looking at a lot of worm burners. Like you said, you take away the downstroke and end up catching it on the upstroke. You could probably get away with it from fluffy bermuda and rough sometimes but I would work on your tempo. I play mine just slightly forward from my mid irons for normal trajectory shots. If you leave a lot of shots right, you could try a stronger grip.

Place the ball where ever you need to to hit it straight. Some people play them like irons. They hit down on the ball and take a divot. That was the intention of the club, but certainly not what you HAVE to do. If it works for you to play the ball a little forward and the ball goes straight and the distance you need it to, then that's what you need to do. Over time your swing might get better and you will be able to hit more on the downswing. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

There is no right or wrong way to hit a ball. Just whatever works best for you.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

I just got a 4 hybrid a few weeks ago and I play it at the same place I would play my 5 iron. Also, I choke down about an inch on it. It's been a perfect 3 iron replacement for me.

I play mine just like i would the iron that the club is replacing. Its helped me to choke down a little bit at first to really get that "iron feel", and not try and sweep it like a wood. But in the end just find what works for you, and if its consistently straight then thats the way to go!
