I recently tried the callaway x-20s with the steel uniflex shaft and could not make good contact. I usually make good contact with my current irons but with these I kept hitting way behind the ball with every club. Anyone know what would cause this. Thanks for any info

I have only swung the 8 iron once, but to me the clubs seemed heavier than my current no name set. That might be causing it.

A quote from Kris
...is that college bball really isn't "lower tier". The better teams have their rosters filled with guys who could play in the NBA. hell, guys used to come straight from high school to the NBA. I really don't think there's much of a difference skill-wise between the two.

Its a uniflex club, with offset. Yuck.

What club did you have before? How fast is your club headspeed?

What club are you using? I have played with the mp57's put since I couldn't do them justice I also picked up the x20s.

Maybe the shaft lengths and/or weight is throwing you off.

To this I say congradulations. You have just elimated that set from your list of numerous possiblilites. I'd move on to another model and demo them.

There are simply too many great choices out there. I'd not try to make a set work out. Stick and move, brother, stick and move.

Not sure how to edit a posts since I'm on my phone but, it's one thing to just give and another to give it a shot. From what the op describes it sounds like he's hit a few range balls.

I gave the mp57s a shot, since they were my friends clubs and even though they hit like butter I got the reccomendation to get x20s since I'm still new to the game.

I have played the Callaway`s,tried the X 20`s. Just don`t like the long clubhead,rounded edges, offset. If i went back to Callaway, it would be the forged.

Why would you think the uniflex shafts suck?

because everytime I have hit them it's a horrible sight to see...

I felt like i had no control of the club at all.. just my .02 but I know of quite a few people who share my same thoughts..

sorry it took so long to get back to this but anyway, they are alot heavier than my current irons which are just some golden bear m-tours which actually hit pretty good. My driver swing speed was in the low 120's last year not sure this year but seems to be the same. I know I swing irons pretty hard too so maybe these uniflex shafts are for lower swing speeds.Even the balls I hit decent which wasnt many wouldnt carry as far as my golden bears.

I have comments on the Uniflex shaft, and on X20 irons.

I went online to get specs on the Uniflex shaft, and it proved to be a treasure hunt. Bits and pieces on Uniflex showed up in a couple of dozen sites.

Basically, Uniflex appears to span the Regular and Stiff shaft ranges. In terms of Project X, probably 5.0 to 5.5. One clubsmith said it had the softness of a Regular but the stability of a Stiff.

Another person likened them to the proprietary True Temper Memphis 10 shafts from a few years back. (I've heard murmurs about "Memphis 10" shafts through the years, but have never knowingly hit one)

Another site suggested these shafts in irons worked best for people who hit their drives between 225 and 300 yards.

Callaway initially figured Uniflex would work for about 70 % of males golfers. Don't know what their current estimates are.

================

As for X20 irons, I play them. They may appear to have more offset than they actually do, as the bore-through hosel tapers into the offset area. Oddly, Callaway does not list offset or bounce in the specs of their irons. I wrote Callaway asking where they kept such info, but have received no reply.

Just from eyeball comparison, X20s appear to have less offset than the Ping Eye2 clones I played for 15 years.

Callaway has forged irons, but they also have the X20 Tour and X22 Tour models. These have smaller heads than the X20 and X22 models, and somewhat less offset.

The X20 and X22 irons do have large clubheads; the one complaint I have is that X20s feel a little "sticky" when hitting out of the rough. A smaller head might be nice.

If you're hitting behind the ball, you may not be getting your legs into the shot. When I'm hitting them fat, it's because I'm trying to be "too smooth" and don't really move through the ball properly.

One thing about the Uniflex: it has a mid-kick, and I don't have as much trouble ballooning the ball on windy days as I did with my old irons.
=========
Again, give the X22 Tour model a try along with the X-Forged.

Focus, connect and follow through!
