I was on vacation a while ago for a couple of weeks. I rented one of these for my entire trip. At first I thought I wouldn't mind owning one, but the more I drove it, the more I didn't like it. I do like the fact that the front section of the roof can be quickly removed (targa style), and not to bad for around town driving. Highway driving is not very confidence inspiring though, and for a tall person such as myself (6'4") road trips get bothersome on the back. It only had just over 8000 miles on it, and there were numerous screws missing and I had to ziptie the splash guard underneath back into place because of more lost screws and push pins. I have owned many vehicles in my lifetime, and was never so glad to give something back from where I got it. The overall quality was just terrible (in my opinion). Boy, was I happy to get home to my F150 supercrew, which is soon to be 5 years old and still drives better than that new jeep.

Of course, opinions will vary......

Im not a fan of them. They roll over easily, they ride like a lumber wagon and the transfer cases on them are weak.
If you want a small SUV, theres many much better options on the market.

I forgot to mention the big yellow stickers all over the passenger compartment. "The roof and doors of this vehicle are designed only to keep out the elements, and are not designed for occupant safety in the event of a collision"......hope you don't have kids to tote around.

As for SUV's, the only other firsthand experience I have is with a Subaru Forrester. If you love winter driving and driving quickly on gravel roads, it can make you grin. I owned one for four years and only traded it in because my kids were getting bigger and didn't have enough legroom sitting behind me. Went to a (yuck) minivan after that, barf. We only had one issue with it that was covered under warranty. Fun little SUV to drive with a standard transmission, and was sharp looking too. Subaru makes the second best (next to Audi) all wheel drive system there is.

If you want a small SUV, Id go with the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V or Ford Escape.

My girlfriend has an '08 Ford Escape V6 4WD and is a nice little buggy. Its solidly built, comfortable, will handle anything you need as long as you arent doing hardcore off-roading and gets decent gas milage (25 mpg highway is a very real possibility). Id personally take a Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V over an Escape simply because the Toyota and Honda are likely to be more reliabile in the long run and will hold their value better than the Ford will but Id be willing to bet you could drive an Escape for 200,000 miles and it wouldnt give you much trouble.

I drive a Jeep commander right now. I got it beefed up quite a bit, but even before all the work it was a nice turck.

Do the new wranglers stiil use the strait 6? I don't even know. I had 2 I6 jeeps in the past, and you just can't kill them. The I6 engine will always make funny noises and make you think something is wrong, but no matter what I did to those two Jeeps, they just kept running.

Good luck.

My wife just test drove all of those (and some others). She ended up buying a Subaru Forester and couldn't be happier.

A lease is the most expensive way to drive a car.

this statement is simply not true. Leasing a car (depending on the state you live, and the type of vehicle owner you are) is a fantastic way to fix the cost of ownership on a vehicle. The secret to buying a car on a lease is to understand entirely what you are buying. Make sure you buy enough miles up front and know exactly what you are buying.

The fact is this (I worked in the automotive finance and leasing industry for several years) no matter who you are, there is a lease that might fit your needs. In fact, several people actually benefit from leases (given the tax implications of leasing vs. buying) People that don't benefit from the tax implications, leasing is still a decent option because it guarentee's the value of the vehicle at trade in time. In other words, you are buying a value insurance policy.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water
