Help me build out my bag

47 and just getting started... sure wish I did this instead of football or cross country in highs school...

I'm a 20 or so , been playing a lot of golf since July.

Currently I have;

• Snake Eyes Python 10.5 driver
• Python 5 wood
• Callaway Big
• Bertha Irons 3 - SW

I'd really like a hybrid, but not sure which way to go. Seems like a "rescue" club would come in handy. People also tell me to replace the long irons with hybrids. That said, I feel like I should learn to use the long irons before tossing them.

Wedges, I have the P and S, seems like my whole day is spent with a wedge and a putter. Now that I realize the importance of the short game, how many wedges should I be carrying?

So a utility hybird and a gap wedge?

Oh and the putter... I'll figure that out sooner or later....

my bag consists of driver, 3 wd, 3 hybrid,4-p,56 vokey,putter. it works for me because i don't feel like i need a gap wedge at all my sw= 95 yds pw=110 gw= 100? there is no need for one really just choke down on a pw. i use my 3 hybrid alot,i would trade your 5 wd in for one, they have about the same loft. and i would definentely get a 3 wd.

If you have a PW and a SW, don't worry so much about extra wedges at this time. Too many wedges for a beginner just causes confusion. 18 birdies has the right idea.

Don't worry about 3-iron until season 2. It's a bit challenging to hit until your swing develops. Many excellent players just don't use them, opting for hybrids. I use the 3-iron mainly as a driving iron for narrow holes, and on windy days (keeps ball low).

Just start playing, taking note of where your game is progressing, and adjust from there. See where in your game you actually need help from another club.

Also, take some lessons. If you stay with the same pro over several months, he can suggest what club mix would work best as your game progresses.

Don't feel you have to carry all 14 clubs right away. I've seen plenty players with 10 clubs who play better than those with an overfull bag, because they know what each of the 10 clubs will do.

I jsut recently bought my own first set after using granpas. It camwith a driver, 3 & 5 wood, 4Hi, 5-PW, and a putter. I haven't used them all, but I can promise you I have used the hybrid almost as much as the driver and putter. Easily a staple in my bag. I traded a cheapo driver, the bag my G-Force's came in, an old 8 iron, and a 3Hi to my cousin for 9 holes when I got the new set. I miss the 3Hi. Good choice. I think you'll lighten your bag a bit by replacing a couple irons and maybe your 5 wood.

Definitely check out the Nickent 4DX Ironwood, as well as Adams Hybrids, if you are looking for easy to hit 3Hs.

In determining your bag makeup you should try to match it to your swing speed, ballstriking ability, and tendencies. A basic set would include a Driver, 3W, 5W, 3-PW, GW, SW, Putter. Many people will choose to substitute the 3wood or 5wood for the LW or the long irons for hybrids. You should get a hybrid if you struggle with the long irons and cannot get them airborne very high. However, if you're a high ball hitter, a long iron may work just fine or a lower launching hybrid so it doesn't balloon. Generally, people who have higher swing speeds will keep the lower lofted irons because they have the clubhead speed to hit high long irons while slower swingers will replace the 3, 4, and sometimes 5 hybrid. If your swing speed is average I would recommend a 3 hybrid replacement. Also, I would recommend a GW unlike what some people have said. A GW these days is essential when PW lofts have gotten lower than 46 while the SW is still 54-56 making a huge distance gap making the GW essential.

Actually I've been looking at Snakeyes, Python or Viper. The driver and fairway wood have worked out very well. A few monts ago I went to an introductory club building course, dirt simple (not fitting, just assembly). I have been fitted for clubs, but to be honest, I'm still building a swing.

Do NEED a hybrid? don't know, but I've hit a few from buddies bags and like them. At this point I'm still learning the basics and I've kept my bag simple. Solid set of irons, good driver one fairway wood. I won't learn about hybrids if I don't have one...
