For the last week and a half I've been reviewing my swing on video and it looks horrible! It seems no matter what I do (or feels like I'm doing) I cannot come up with anything other than a really flat swing,,,,I mean really flat. When I first video'd last week, it was almost like a baseball swing flat. I've tried to steepen it with mixed results, one swing will show the swing is on plane and the next will not be. I cannot keep my left arm straight and I'm also getting some sort of funky left wrist cock starting at the nine o'clock position. I've been working with a medicus and it seems to be more of a tempo, and take-a-way trainer. (It can be swung with a flat swing without breaking down)

The guys that give lessons around here shoot in the 80's and have problems themselves so I'd rather not spend money on lessons from them. (I've shot 2 rounds in the mid 80's within the past month) I knew I should never had watched my swing, I had a good drive and a bag full of fairway woods I could hit, mid-irons were non-existent, and I have a decent chip and putt game ( I think it's still there), but now I have basicially no game at all and my only swinging is limited to birdie balls in the backyard.

Any tips will be applied!!!!

If you want to do some self-diagnosis and like to use video, pick up a copy of "Picture Perfect Swing" by Michael Breed. He does a pretty good job of showing you how to use video at different points in the swing to understand what is going on and how to fix it. Although I periodically take lessons, I still find it pretty good to augment the pro's teachings and help me keep learning.

If it makes you feel better, there's no way that your swing looks worse than Sir Charles'. I was watching the Haney Project the other day, and every time he swung, I kind of cringed.......

Huge improvement overnight!!!!! I found a "butt against a brickwall drill" to put more air in my swing and it has helped a ton so far (6 iron has some scrapes on it now). While watching my video, I could see tons a jerky lower body movement with my weight almost being shifted "reverse" of what it should be. I could also see my funky left wrist action was caused by too strong of a right hand. I tried my best to correct these areas, was hitting my birdieballs straight, and hit 5 of the prettiest 6 irons I have hit in years with some shaggers. No ide of the distance, but I was amazed at how much higher and farther the ball flies when my swing is somewhat on plane!!! My driver still looks flat, but comparing the plane of the shaft at address and at the top of my backswing, it should be. If you guys took time to read through all this dribble, I thank you and I highly recommend reviewing you swing on video,,,it pretty simple to identify the bigger flaws. I'll be back on the course soon!!!!

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
