I have seen various pros use 3-9 irons and then remove their pitching wedge for a 48* wedge (vokey, Cleveland etc.). I am thinking about doing this but was wondering if anyone uses this bag configuration and how it works for them. I would think it would work nicely because I find it tough to chip with an iron style pitching wedge and having a vokey 48* would help with hitting lower chips with spin. Thanks.

Your AP-2 pitching wedge is 47º. If you had a 48º Vokey wedge, you would have a 4-degree progression through your wedges.

Your 9-iron is 43º, so you would have 5º between 9 and Vo PW, which shouldn't mess up your distance yardstick.

My X-20 AW is 50º, same loft as my old set's PW from 1994. My AW is what I use for greenside pitches. I use the X-20 PW as more of a 10-iron than a wedge, so I'm in a different situation. Some senior golfers I know have a PW, a SW, and a Lob, and don't worry about a AW/GW.

So, go with a wedge mix that fits your game plan. Since you want the use the club often as a short-game wedge, adding the Vo-48 would be a good move.

Hit the course with both... As I know my r7 tp pw is 47 degrees and using a 47 degree mizzy mpt I see a huge distance gap when both are struck well.. R7 is 148 and the mizzy is only 135 so just because they are the same loft doesn't mean they go the same distance

I'd say that's a good move if you need more finesse with it. I don't find it difficult to chip with a regular PW, but I usually either chip with a 4 iron, 7 iron or a SW, depending on how much roll I need. I don't really use my AW or PW for anything but full shots.

I actually made that change last week by using a 46* vokey in the bag. For me it really is a confidence thing when standing over the ball, I feel like I can do now wrong with a vokey wedge in my hands. For some reason I also get a little bit more distance out of the vokey as opposed to my set pitching wedge.

Very good point. Don't automatically assume that a 48* wedge will fit your distance gap. You may find that a 46* Vokey will travel as far as your AP2 PW. Hit the course with a few different lofts and go from there.

Or you might find that the 48 fits the gap perfectly. My 47° wedge fits my distance gaps perfectly. It replaced a 47° PW from the MP-57, which I never bought in the first place. I have a much easier time chipping with it than I have had with the rest of the -57s.

I'm considering a future set to have 8-P as muscle backs (such as the -67s), but it would depend, much like what you're saying, on how well I could chip with one of them.

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
