Went from 54 putts a round a month ago to just 39 putts today, using the one putter length with 4 balls drill that everyone here swears by, then moving back as you sink all 4 balls. It's really given me the confidence that even if I miss a 15-20ft putt, I'm going to be close enough to sink the next one.

Now if I could get myself to actually swing my wedges hard enough, I'd cut my handicap by 10 strokes. I figured out about 12 holes in to hit my wedges twice as hard as I think I need to, and I'd be where I want to end up......

Sounds good. I need to try that method myself. Sounds like a great way to get your speed down and thats my biggest issue.

I've been hitting 6 feet putts on the carpet in my room usually in batches of 50 every day. My record is 40/50. It breeds confidence, that is for sure.

It's getting to be winter months here in Colorado, so outside practice time is getting shorter & shorter.

Do you think that putting inside on the carpet is a good idea? I know that some carpet is pretty thin so it's probably closer to green speeds than something thicker. At my place, we have thick carpet (not as thick as shag carpeting) in most of the rooms and wood floors in other rooms.

I would think that putting inside on carpet all winter would cause me to learn to hit putts alot harder than I need to because of the slow speed of the carpet. Would I learn bad habits over the winter since all my putts would be way too fast for regular course greens? Or is putting on carpet (although not as good as real greens) better than nothing?

I hate having to start over each spring because I don't touch my clubs at all over the winter months.

I putt on the carpet in my house almost every night, and it definately hasn't hurt my game at all. Whenever I get to the course, I just make a few putts on the practice green before I tee off to make sure I've got the speed down.

BTW: Played this morning, and dropped 3 more strokes, and came in with 34 putts today. My putting is definately where it needs to be, I need to maintain that, and work hard on my short wedge shots now, they let me down today big time. I always seem to leave anything where I can't take a full swing really short. Time to get to work, I guess.

Playing 18 at another course this afternoon, hopefully my putting game will be just as good on a course where I don't know the greens as well. And I'm going to make a concious effort to hit my wedges harder, so I can cut some more strokes off.

When I putt in my apartment, I'm more concerned about my direction than my speed. I concern myself with keeping my body still, swinging with my shoulders. Making a solid stroke and listening for the right sound.

Well my putting average is 34 putts per round and I usually have at least one 3 putt ... so there's definitely work to be done. Thanks for the input on the indoor carpet putting. I'm going to go ahead & try that this winter to see how things go.

yes I too use this drill and its awesome!

although I take this drill one step further - i make myself hit 12 before i move back a putter grip length once i get about 5 grip lengths out, I shorten the amount of balls from 12 to a percentage - like 60 or 70% keep up the great work!

Wow. You are totally on the right track mentally. You've got the putter working. Like you said, get the wedges going and you'll be playing some GOLF! Play With Confidence.

    • that is an excellent approach. I did that with my last set. I made a few 7 irons from different heads and shafts. Getting a feel for how they play on the course is the right idea. Let us know how it goes.
    • I’m glad the USGA booted some of the hecklers. It’s getting out of hand. I wish the networks wouldn’t mic the crowd to give those idiots a platform.
    • New member here, and I have decided to upgrade my clubs. I have been playing for a long time but these last 10 years I have had to put four kids through college. So I've played a few rounds a year and some years have not played at all. I am currently playing Titleist 716 AP2's with Rifle 6.5 steel shafts and Winn grips. I used to hit my 7 iron around 165 yds until just 5 years ago. I turned 62 this year and noticed I can barely get my 7 iron to 145 yds. I went for a fitting to try out some new player distance irons. I don't think I need game improvement irons because I'm pretty straight and rarely try to work a ball (if I'm working a ball, then I most definetely did something wrong to get there). I tried a bunch of irons (Callaway, Mizuno, PXG, Taylormade, Srixon, Ping, and Titleist) and I kept coming back to the Ping and Titleist. They just felt right and really looked good when lining up a shot. The Ping, by far, went the longest of all the irons. The Titleist was a close second in distance. Both felt buttery smooth through impact. I was wondering if anyone else has any experience with these irons. I was getting 160 yds with a nice smooth swing (81 mph swing speed). I know I'm asking a lot of my clubs but my last fitting was 27 years ago and I ended up with some Cleveland TA3's or TA2's forged irons with Dynamic Gold S300 (swing speed 87 mph). I really love the feel of my AP2's and the place I'm going to purchase from is going to make a 7 iron in both Ping and Titleist for me to test on real grass. I'm pretty certain it's going to be either one. They're both identical in price for a set of 5-PW. I'm going to forego a 4 iron and get another 4 hybrid to go along with my 3 hybrid. Any and all replies are welcome.
    • Day 47, June 22.  After work today, I spent 20 minutes in my indoor practice room, hitting about as many balls.  Slow, as slow as I could, 6-iron swings, same priority piece as the past month.
    • Day 291 6-22 full, faster swings, focusing on low point, missing towel. Recorded some face on and dtl. Practicing full speed changes is something I wasn't doing enough.
