I have an opportunity to get a new driver if i want. I currently have a TaylorMade 07 Burner with the stock stiff shaft. I like the head on that club, but hate the shaft. It is too long for me, too light and to whippy. I am about 5'10. I hit a friends driver with a UST V2 shaft in his driver and i loved that driver. So my question is get my driver reshafted or get a TaylorMade R9driver?

an r9 adjustable driver can help even lower handicaps like you. But never underestimate a shaft that suits you. Sorry that does not help just pointing out the pros to you.

I don't think you can ever underestimate what a new shaft can do for your game. I recently broke the shaft of my Titleist 905T. I replaced it with a Fuji E360, and I picked up 10 yards or so. And my ballflight seems to be right where I want it.

The only caveat is to make sure you talk to someone that knows their stuff. And try different shafts to, and consider what makes you like that shaft better than the current shaft. Does it feel lighter, heavier? What about the torque, and flex point? Personally, I have hit the Burners, and they are very light. I think the shaft is only 55grams. My shaft is 72 grams, and that makes a lot of difference.

In my bag:

If you want help with what shaft options you have: What is your SS? What is your preferred ball flight? Control vs Distance? Tempo: Fast , Smooth, Slow? Loft of Current Driver?

My SS is a little faster than yours, but your traj, tempo, both contro and distance is spot on what I like.

Your choices are: ( I have research the crap out of shafts) Proforce V2 Stiff 66 g (I had one but a little lite for me) Graffaloy ProLaunch Platinum Stiff Aldila NVS, DVS, or Voodoo Diamana Blueboard Stiff Graphite Design: Aura Red or Pershing (I own the Pershing) If you dont like any of these good specs would be: 60-72 grams Stiff Flex mid kick torque 2.5-3.8 The heavier the shaft the stiffer it is: I had the V2 66g, it was to lite for my @110 mph SS. Although the 70g version probably would have been fine

I'd say give a UST Proforce V2 a go since they are very highly spoken of. I did not like it at all when I tried it with the Nike SQ5900.

Just had a GD YS-6+ put in my 07 Burner. I've only had 1 round with it so far and was a bit under the weather that day so I can't comment on the diff. between stock and the YS-6. I say though that I'd go with a new shaft vs. a new club.

Not wanting to hijack the thread, but would a TM Burner regular shaft have a torque problem that would manifest itself in super slices? The slower I swing the straighter the ball and the closer to a center hit, fast equals toe and towering slices.

I vote that you give the V2 shaft a try. I'd go lighter than 72g....say something in the 60-65g range.

A buddy has about the same swing speed as yours with a smooth transition. He has this shaft in his FT-5 and it is amazing to me how well he strokes that club vs his previous driver....an '07 TM Burner stiff flex. He stripes it nicely dead center of most every fairway. His distance is just as good as with the Burner but his accuracy was greatly improved.

I tried the high launch version but it just wasn't for me. The normal V2 stiff would have been the ticket.

Good luck

Graffaloy ProLaunch Platinum Stiff Aldila NVS, DVS, or Voodoo Diamana Blueboard Stiff Graphite Design: Aura Red or Pershing (I own the Pershing)
Would you happen to know the prices of those shafts?

V2, NVS, Aura red @$70-80

Pershing,ProLaunch Platinum @$50-60 DVS @$100 Voodoo, Blueboard @125+ You can buy pulled shafts off of e b a y but be very carefull and make sure that the tip diameter is right and do research to see what the length of your driver will be with the shaft installed. Clubs shaft borings are different especially with bore thru drivers. If you buy a 44" pulled shaft it might be 45.5" on most drivers, but <44" on a bore thru driver

There is little difference between driver heads and COR can't exceed .83 in any USGA legal driver head. The shaft makes the biggest difference per flex and kick point. So I'd suggest you keep the head, if you like it, and reshaft.

A couple of things to keep in mind. 1) OEM that have there shafts made by after market companies won't be as stout as the same after market shaft. That is to say that a V2 shaft that has been put in by the OEM will have a little less flex than the same shaft off of the shelf. The reason for this is that the softer flex will fit a wider margin of golfers than the same off of the shelf shaft. 2) there is no continuity between flexes of graphite shafts from one manufacturer to another. IMO the best way to find a shaft that will work best for you is to get on a launch monitor with a knowledgable tech. The numbers will give you an idea of what flex and kick point will work best for your swing speed and swing. The more consistant your swing the more accurate the numbers will be.

i would definately step up to a 65 or 75 gram shaft then. i have my shaft 1/2" shorter than standard as I feel as if it stiffens it up slightly and give me touch more control (my home courses have very tight fairways).

Best way > head to your local store and try some varying shafts. Most drivers these days will come with multiple stock shaft combos. not just the ol' generic. they will be more than willing to help you out. chris

I think the YS 6 and 6+ are mid high launch, which is outside his scope for trajectories. Great shaft though... I bought the GD Pershing over anything else, mainly due to price, but that be said: All the reviews are great on it, and I have never hit as many fairways. Just because its a few years old doesn't mean it still isn't a great shaft. Plus Golfsmith still sells them new, must tell you something...

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
