I'm looking for something to break up the monotony of major classes next semester so I'm gonna get a degree requirement out of the way at the same time. We have three PE courses in golf: beginner, intermediate, advanced.

Has anyone ever had a golf PE class? I want to get an idea of the skill level in those three. Obviously I'm not a beginner, but I don't want to look like an ass in an intermediate course either. I'm going to ask the guys at the driving range but I just wanted to get a general opinion first.

I took 2 golf PE classes. Started in the beginner, and it was just that. Very very basic. They started us on the range and putting green for the first couple of weeks, then it was 2 rounds of golf a week for the duration. The intermediate class was better, focused on swing mechanics a bit, tried to teach a bit about different kind of shots (punch, flop, that sort of thing). The intermediate was more fun for me, as the golf that was played was more golfish, instead of hitting a ball 8-10 times towards a hole.

We had 2 at Penn State and I took them both.

The first one was a ton of short game work and basic swing mechanics mostly for the first few weeks. The instructor videoed your swing from two angles and showed you some things, but nothing like a lesson. Then we went to the range and he watched us and sort of grouped us depending on skill level. From then on we just went to the course every week and played. He would walk around with the groups who sucked and help them and let the people who knew what they were doing just have at it. Awesome.

Talent level : Never swung a club and up.

The second one was "Golf on Tour" and you had to take the first one before this or let the coaches see you play and approve you. We went to the range the first 2 weeks, just to establish groups again, and then every week we would play a different course all over Central PA. including a few private clubs that one or more of the coaches belonged to. Great time and all cool people.

Talent level : Bogey golfers or better

You can't beat college credit for playing golf. Plus we always paid a lesser rate at the clubs and were even allowed to drink on the course in the second class.

I took one when I was in school. I think they just offered two levels. I had been playing for several years and had no problems breaking 90 so I was able to get into the advanced course. Nice change of pace class I guess. The instructor had been the women's coach for over 20 years and had played a few LPGA events and a Women's Open or two. So she knew her stuff.

I guess I learned a few things here and there. The big help was on the rules. I had never really studied and read the rule book and a big part of the class was a rules test. The rest of it was just for fun mostly. Pretty easy 1 hour A.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

I often play w/a 'kid, who attends JSU and had taken the 2 courses they offer. The first was a pre-req. of the 2d. Basics, rules, swing mechanics, etc...the instructor was also the team coach. This guys drive is 285 in the air..the instructor sort of made him an asst. instructor because he's been playing for so long. The second class was like a teaching type/lesson giving course. He enjoyed it and was 2 easy grades.

PS: GO Bulldawgs!

I took beginner golf for PE about 20 years ago at a major university. We putted a lot, hit a few wedge shots, and perhaps one or two days we hit some short irons. Never played a single hole at any course. We were tested on the rules of golf. Not all the rules, mind you, but only on a few that we were specifically directed to look at.

I had never played golf before then and learned absolutely nothing about how to play from the class. It did however, inspire me to take up the sport so I could actually experience what it was like to play on a course.

As an aside, why would you want to take a PE course on something you already know how to do? The whole point of college is to experience new things.

Took one in college. Take the intermediate. Beginner is rules and swing basics. In the beginner class, you might play a par 3 course, but not 18 holes on a par 72 course.

Currently in "Independent Golf" at Emory University. We have everything from scratch players to 25+ handicappers. I feel right at home in the class.

As much as I would enjoy taking racquetball, I'd much rather have a course where I get to play nine holes once a week on a course that hosts SEC championships and Nationwide events for a grade

Sorry for polluting the thread but at a glance I read this as "Has anyone taken a pee on a golf course" haha.

And no, i haven't.

I took golf as one of my "required" PE classes. My professor let me "test out" of it after a few classes. I continued to show up anyway for the heck of it.

I took the beginner golf class at the local community college a while back. They have a driving range on campus, so it was a lot of short irons, swing mechanics, and short game instruction. Not a single lesson or test on the rules, just a brief FYI on specific issues here and there during the lessons. The driving range had enough mats for the whole class, the instructor would have us work on some particular shot, and would walk up and down the mats and coach us individually. Was pretty helpful, especially near the end of the semester when people stopped showing up and I got more one on one time with the instructor, who, btw, happeed to be my PE teacher in high school way back in the day, and who has now passed away. I was planning to go back someday and take the intermediate course with him. :(
