This isn't exactly the thread for "why would you cut down the eligibility list," but my reasons primarily stem from being sick of seeing players get by on a few top tens a year and nothing else. I'd like to see more turnover - maybe people will go for the win more often than a comfy top 10.

And we don't need to dwell on it ... but there is an underlying theme to how you view non-winning touring PGA pros. Basically 'guys happy just to get a paycheck rather than laying it all out to get a win.' Or said another way 'guys busy hitting to the fat part of the greens Sunday afternoon to protect a tasty paycheck rather than challenge for the lead. Who are these guys?

If we pulled all the guys that had 3 or fewer top 10 finishes and no wins this year from the PGA tour off the exempt list you could axe Anthony Kim, Vijay Singh and Sergio Garcia. I think that any pro with a legitimate shot at a win is going for that win and the two-year exemption that comes with it. But that's the rub, so few really have that chance. And having the chance and making the most of it? Ask Jim Furyk how that worked out for him this year.

That may be a bit OT, but i feel the same. The prize money has grown so big over the last years, that everybody who makes it to the PGA Tour and knows he is only a mediocre player, has two choices - work hard, put in the hours and the will to win, or just swim along, do the necessary to stay competitive and milk all the endorsements that come along and still make a decent living - and when mediocre isnt good enough anymore, retire on that.

Such an attitude shouldnt be supported by that much money. You should think, that at such a competitve level, everybody automatically opts for option A. But as Bob Rotella even wrote about in his books - it doesnt take much, to throw all this competitivness over board and take irrational decisions. A solution for this problem might be to increase the payout for a win, and flatten out the rest of the payout structure, so that, if you still go for the "fat parts of the greens" - you wont get along nicely anymore, just mediocre, according to your play.

Any chance you can tell us where he wrote this? I'm not doubting you, and I believe you, since it sounds like something that would come up. I just don't remember it. I also haven't read all of his books. But I would like to see what he says on the topic.

Agreed.

If we pulled all the guys that had 3 or fewer top 10 finishes

They both won last year, and Sergio was on the Ryder Cup Team and gets in as many events as he wants based on his world ranking. They're all easily inside the top 75 on the money list, too.

So my argument holds. It's also still off-topic, so that's the end of it. If you want to discuss exemption cutoffs, it might make for a good thread. Not trying to be a jerk about it - we just like to stick to the topics here.

Let's see, out of the billions of people in world, I've made it into the top 150 in my profession. Yes, we are paid hansomely, but certainly no more than other professional athletes, in fact, most of us make far less. Sure, I have no problem attending MY sponsors functions, as we have a business arrangement. However, being forced to sit through a 4 hour dinner next to old Johnnie Walker breath, and his wife Handsy McGee, is just too much. That's what pro-ams are for.

Then play well enough to get into the pro-am...

This is an obligation for people who aren't good enough to play in the pro-am. You seem to have missed that part.

    • Day 76 - Pretty sore today, so I opted for putting over my Stack session. Primary focus was on starting line, as my putting has been pretty poor this year.
    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
    • Day 109- Putting drills on a putting green for 20 minutes.
    • Day 252: did a stack session. Did some slow rehearsal swings during breaks.
    • Day 82: 3/18/24 Tried a Stack session but could not certify my warmup. Finished with indoor chips and putting.
