Maybe somebody thought about this before, i´m just curios, is there a difference in LAG or energy transfer when you come from the inside to the ball as opposed when you come from the outside. Any ideas?

Yeah - it's tougher to have good lag when you're coming over the top. Or, more specifically, it's tougher to have good clubhead speed when you're coming over the top.

And obviously the clubhead can get too far inside, too, to where it's losing speed. There are a bunch of reasons for this, but one of them is simply that the farther away your hands and arms and the clubhead get from the center of gravity/center of rotation, the slower you'll pivot. Think of a figure skater in a spin pulling her arms in close to her. Approaching on the plane or "from the inside" involves keeping your arms closer, hence, more speed. Again, that's ONE of the reasons why - there are a lot of others. I prefer not to focus on "lag" per se but rather speed in general. Lag happens.

I'd think that "lag" coming from inside would be much more powerful since you'd be able to use your bigger muscles and your entire body would be more connected. By connected I am referring mostly to the fact that your right elbow is closer to your body allowing you to really crush it.

When I think of lag I think of the club storing energy at the top of the backswing. This energy cant be stored if coming too far over the top (as Iacas points out), because you eliminate your body 'torque' in that type of swing. This is why swing plain is so important...

I hate to say it but a drill that helped me stay on plain come for 'The Golf Fix'. Start by setting (2) clubs on your target line, one about 4inches above the ball and one about 4 inches below the ball. Now choke up on your club (off the grip, somewhere on the shaft). Take half of a backswing and stop: if the butt of the club is aiming inside the channel created by the 2 clubs on the ground, your most likely on plain . If your above or below the channel then your take away is too steep or too shallow... Although maybe a touch off subject, hopefully helps

    • Nothing exposes low point control, and for that matter the general quality of ball striking like tight lies. Lol! I am at a crossroad. My days of playing with a super strong left hand grip are coming to an end it seems. I'm finding it increasingly difficult to maintain proper face control through impact as the club face naturally wants to turn over. The quality of strike and ball flight difference when I weaken the grip is stark. Problem is a weaker grip is at odds with my poor sore left forearm which I have been nursing for last few days after 3 days of demanding golf. As of now I will continue my 'transition' to a weaker grip with woods and hopefully my forearm will condition as I go along. Maybe someday I'll get to a normal address with irons too.
