hello all, I recently purchased a new set of clubs and was actually fitted this time . There is only one place near here that does any sort of fitting and it was a very short (<15 minutes or so) process. I have always felt that I needed longer clubs just don't have enough experience with it to know what to look for. I do know that fitting is usually a much longer process.....it was free with purchase of clubs. The new set is 1" long with standard lie. I am just curious if it is normal not to require an adjustment in the lie angle with the additional length? I am 6'5" tall and the clubs are Mizuno MP-52s with DG S300 shafts. I know it will take some adjustments on my part to get used to the longer shafts i.e. setup etc. As i have read the numerous threads on here it seems like most people that have an adjustment either longer or shorter with their clubs have to also have some sort of change in their lie as well. Just trying to shortcut any struggles I am going to have making the adjustment. Any info is appreciated. Thanks

Keep in mind, I don't know what I'm talking about, but I'm your height and I just got fitted for irons as well.

My fitting lasted about an hour, and I also need 1" longer shafts. But I needed a two-degree upright lie angle as well. I assume it's possible that you don't need a lie adjustment, but I will say that about half my fitting was devoted to figuring out exactly what lie angle I needed. From what I understand, you can get the clubs adjusted to your appropriate lie angle after you've had them delivered. Of course, it probably won't be free.

I am also 6'5" and I just got a new set of mizuno irons +3/4" longer and 2 degrees upright but its different for everyone and the only good way to figure it out is hitting clubs off a lie board. Did the fitter have you do this? And if so did you do it with a club that was 1" longer than standard? What was the process they put you through?

Some people have long arms, short legs, flatter swings, etc so just because you are tall doesnt mean your need the lie changed. The extra length might just be all you need. Adding an extra inch will make an iron "play" 2 degrees upright (roughly 1 degree per half inch longer)

Mizuno tends to make their irons a bit flat compared to other manufacturers. The last set of titliest irons I had I was only 1 degree upright but titleist tends to make their standard lies 1 degree more upright than mizuno.

Its not hard for a club fitter to adjust your lies once you have your new clubs if you are really worried about it. If you can go back to the fitter and hit your new clubs off a lie board you can determine if they need an extra tweaking.

I would imagine they had him hit off a lie board, it's so easy and fast...

I think maybe you are used to not having the extra length and maybe you crouch a bit? I would get some lessons with your new irons and make sure all your fundamentals are good (stance, posture, arms, etc) and then see if maybe your swing ends up a little more upright.

I used to really crouch over the ball, and when I hit the lie board with my old swing, it would suggest 2* flat (I'm 5' 10.5"). Now I have a proper stance and posture, and I hit standard lie just fine. So it just goes to show how much of an effect the basics can have on your lie angle.

Usually the longer the shaft, the higher the loft upgrade... usually about 1º upright for every half-inch added...

It is NOT a mathematical formula whatsoever, but it is sort of a median reference for standar type swings.

If you got fitted and they added 1" to your clubs, but did not tweak the lie angle, it means that you stand pretty far from the ball at your address position, or that you have somewhat short arms relative to your 6`5" height...

Please don´t swing while I´m talking !!

thanks for all the suggestions. I hit on a lie board today at the range and was getting contact towards the toe of the club. I called the dealer and they will adjust at no extra cost. I am going to hit them for a couple more days and see if it is consistent and then get em bent. Thanks again.

I was also fitted for my new irons a couple months back, and I ended up at 1" long, and 2° upright. I'm 6'3", so when you compare my specs with some of the others listed above (who are an inch or two taller than I am), it goes to show different swings and body types lead to different fittings.

The other thing you gotta take into consideration is the variation in length and lie angle between each set from each manufacturer. For example, check these three links out:

Mizuno MX-300

Titleist AP1 (2009 Model)

Nike Victory Red

You'll notice that while length and lie are pretty similar between the Nikes and the Titleists, the Mizuno MX 300s were a quarter inch shorter, and at least a half of a degree flatter. That's why it makes much more sense to get fitted in the irons you're buying, or have a club fitter that is going to pay attention to those details, and isn't focused solely on making the sale and getting you out the door.

My AP2's are 1" longer, when they fitted me I tried them with 2° upright and I was hitting them good, but my posture wasn't good, so they put the longer shaft my posture was more comfortable and still hitting them well.

Cheers!

I'm also 6'5" and was fitted back in April for my current set.

The fitter strongly suggested 4.5 degrees upright and +1.25".
