The last time I was able to practice, I was hitting my 7 iron around 155. The other irons were all 10 yards or less apart. Sometimes there seemed to be minimal distance change at all.
Recently I read Hogans 5 lessons book. Yesterday I was able to hit again for the first time in awhile. I tried to implement some of the things I read, and I hit the ball better than I ever had before. My 7 iron picked up about 5 yards. Here is my question though. My 5 iron is now carrying 185 to 190, so that is almost 20 yards longer than before, but my pitching wedge and 9 iron are shorter. PW used to be 130, now about 110. Is this normal? If I can keep it up it should help me. Now my irons could take me from 110 to 190, before it was 130 to 175.

The distances you've given don't make any sense - but your data is based on only TWO visits to the range.

A 30 hc will be typically show wide inconsistency from day to day, not to mention the possible differences in temperature and wind and if it's a different range then add in different balls and accuracy of the markings, etc.

In other words, keep practicing and keep track over a longer period of time and it should all begin to make sense.

I am pretty sure my distances are acurate. I am hitting at the same spot always. My question was more this: Why did my long irons get longer and the short irons get shorter? I have noticed with my new swing the trajectory is a little lower. Maybe this has something to do with it?

Makes no sense. Go to the range ten more times and report back.

How are you calculating your distances? It's very difficult to get an accurate gauge on distances at the range. Most ranges have terrible balls and some even have 80% balls that only fly 80% of the their normal distance.

But yeah, the distances you gave don't make a lot of sense. If you're picking up yards with other clubs, no reason you'll lose yardage with your pitching wedge unless you're just mishitting it.

Yes it's good but you have to realize that you're changing the angle of attack. All the distance in the world doesn't really matter unless you have consistent distances inside of 100yds.

    • I mean there has to be some thought. For eg., something like 'soft knees and wrists' at set up and maybe a dynamic 'left arm to chin' as a trigger to start DS. I have these one or two anchor thoughts and have served me well. In fact, my wildest swings are the one where I have no thoughts or if I forget to walk thru my anchor thoughts. In contrast my best rounds are where I am consistent with the anchor thoughts.    OTOH, if I am running my entire half hour lesson (hypothetical) with some pro that I had last Saturday or whatever before every swing then I'm probably in trouble before I even get over the ball.
    • Two bits. Bit 1 The NCAA's appeal of Brendan Sorsby being granted a temporary injunction will not be heard until February, so there will be nothing to prevent Sorsby from playing the full season and potential CFP.  Bit 2 The Big Ten Conference will hold a meeting and is expected to ban all of its athletic programs from playing Texas Tech in the regular season. Georgia has done the same. The SEC will meet to consider a similar ban. Fellow Big 12 members TCU and Kansas State are spearheading a similar ban, but the conference charter might not allow it. Meanwhile, Big 12 athletic directors are meeting this week to explore what options the conference might have.
    • No, but I'm also in disagreement that golfers have no thoughts over the golf ball, and/or don't ever think I've met someone I truly believe is thinking nothing but "target" or something on most shots.
    • StuM,  I have, in the past, added a left handed club. (Ususally a 7 iron) However, I usually take a stroke penalty and move the ball to where I want it.  I play for fun and in a pinch can use theback side if my club if I don't want the penalty stroke.    RetiredOldMan,  Terry
