Recent advice on hitting hybrids:

You can do both! Some hit down some sweep. That's the beauty of a hybrid. I know some people that can hit them well and I know a lot that can't It's just personal preference I guess.

I'm disappointed in all of the low handicappers chiming in saying they could do nothing but hook the ball with their hybrids, and instead of fixing the problem, they abandoned the hybrid.

i'm sure it disappoints, but i didn't abondon the hybrid to not fix the problem, it's just not for me.....if i spent time on it, cause i wanted a hybrid in my bag, i'd be able to hit it no problem...

I probably hit my 2-hybrid off the fairway or out of the rough at least 7-8 times per round, plus off the tee on those random 225 yard par-3s that are so popular these days. It's generally my second shot on par-5s if I'm not going for the green but I want to advance the ball 200 or so yards. I never used a 2-iron, so I can't really compare them, but I looooooooooooooooooooovvvvvvvvvvvvvvve my hybrid. I can hit it straight, I can hook it around trees, I can fade it on doglegs, it always always gets me out of the rough, and I've even been known to putt with it occasionally when I'm up against the collar. If it could dance and had a rich daddy I would marry it.

Pretty much what he said! I wouldn't even care if it could dance

I own a bunch of hybrids, and I have to say that adding them to my bag has been the single biggest factor in becoming a better player. I can now confidently hit the ball at the green from 160+ yards. If you looked at my old irons, that I just replaced, the 6i thru PW are all worn from several years of use, but the 3, 4, and 5 irons look like they are brand new. If I were to try to sell them, I'd feel fine telling someone they had barely been used at all, as it's totally true. At different points in time, I've even carried a 6h, with no iron longer than a 7. There is a good argument to be made for maybe playing a 7W or 9W instead, but I think most average players should replace their 3 and 4 and maybe 5 irons with hybrids. As far as this thread goes, there is no-one at my club who "can't" hit a hybrid. It's rubbish. If you want to make a topic saying hybrid players aren't as good cause they can't hit a long iron, go ahead and do it, but let's not pretend that a type of club that's designed to be easy to hit is difficult. Say what you really mean, please!

I have to say I have a hard time transitioning from 3w to a 3hybrid. Like said earlier, I draw or snap hook the 3 hybrid. maybe I just need to work on it?

    • Love resurrecting this thread! The float-load feel bit and then the old video I think from Mike on how to hit low and high chips were the kickstart to my short game journey, where I play well below my handicap (officially 9.x right now, via arccos I only lose 1 stroke per round to a scratch golfer in my short game). I've spent lots of time with float-load and I can be a sniper inside ~40 yards with my GW and 60*. But I actually just started trying a version of this for like ~40-70 yard shots! 70-115 I have a like hands to belly button height stock partial swing shot that I hit with SW-9i dialed.
    • Played 9 today. Good and bad. Full Swing - Right arm straighter feel needs to be there 100%.  Short Game - Just needs a good couple of practice sessions to polish. Too long of backswing most of the time.  Putting - more straight back and straight through “feel” works well. Hitting center of putting face more.
    • My rule of thumb is a PW for everything from 100 yards in except specialty shots like a flop or a low runner.  I find it easier to eyeball it for distance and swing on feel for the distance I need to hit
    • Day 3: Worked on putting at different distances focusing on matching the backswing and follow-through lengths.
