I bought some used (like-new) MP-57's off Ebay a few weeks ago and took them to the range today. My previous set were Callaway X-14's.

I started out with a 7i, then progressed to 5i, 6i, 9i, and PW. Hit a total of about 50 balls.

My initial reaction is WOW! I have never been so consistent with my shots. Even though I have improved significantly in the last 6-9 months with my swing, I was still used to about 30% of my shots being "great", another 40% being "good", and the remaining 30% ranging from mediocre to out right bad (slice/hook/skulled). By great I mean if I was shooting for a green, i would hit it. Good means I would be within 10-20 yds from the green.

My percentage of "great" shots immediately went up to 50%, good shots at 40%, and only about 10% bad shots. Even my mishits were pretty nice. I am very happy with these irons and, along with my new Odyssey Black Series #1 putter, there is no reason that I should not break 80 in 2010 and get my HC down to 12 or less.

Could be a consequence of the shaft, because it is hard for me to imagine that a 21 hcp would increase consistency going from cally x-14 to mizunos mp-57...

This is a SD hcp talking, who went from cally x-18 to mizuno mp-57 and got rid of them in less than a year... even after a shaft change...

But, shader things have enlightened me...

Please don´t swing while I´m talking !!

it could also be an increased sense of confidence and focus, since you were taking brand new sticks out for a trst drive.

I applaud your enthusiasm, and I am excited for your driving range success! I am definitely not trying to throw a wet blanket on you, but before you start seeing 12 handicap stars, take those suckers out on the course :)

You may find that the quicker way to a 12 will be the short game.

Still, glad you are happy with the irons - I like mine well enough (although I am considering a change to some GI sticks since I am not playing as much at all anymore).

The only problem I have with this would be if the set is only 5i to PW. I hate stumbling onto a great set of irons on ebay - then finding out there are no long irons (2-4).

No, it included 3-PW. The 3i stays in the garage since I have a hybrid for that job.

That's good - you may never hit it very often, but if you ever play a links style course it's nice to have long irons.

Good man, I also own a set of MP-57s. They're a cracking bargain right now seeing as they've just been replaced with Mizuno releasing the MP-52s and 58s).

Wishing you all the success in the future!

i hope you have great succes with those irons. i'm the proud owner of a new set of irons and can't wait to give them a hit. Hopefully the 710 Ap2 won't let me down and i'll have the same result as you did with the MP-57.

Convinced a buddy of mine to buy a set of 57s almost two years ago and he still loves them. Got my first set of Mizunos last night and hit about 300 balls today at the range. Still smiling.

We'll see how they play in the morning.

I played 9 holes yesterday with them and continue to be very impressed. I am getting the same results I got at the range - ball flight is higher and straighter than my X-14's. And, as an added bonus, when I pure a shot, it feels like butter off the club.

Unfortunately, the course I play is only 6,250 yds from the blue tees so I end up using driver/wedge or driver/5W/wedge on most holes. Next time I play I am going to use my irons only to gauge distance from the tee.

350yd - 5i, hard 8i, or 3/9, or 7/7, or . . .

that's great...but your success probably came from the excite, and newly found confidence from having new clubs in your hands. happens around here alot, then after a while scores go back up. the real secret to lowering your handicap is the short game (100 yards in)...glad to hear your enthusiasm though. wish you the best in 2010!

Oh, I know this to be true. That's why 60% of my range practice is with my wedges.

    • Day 37: did my drill swings in the garage with foam balls for about 15 minutes. Working on getting my backswing more turned and then going from there.
    • Thanks but honestly… I don't know any other way. I don't mind being wrong so long as I know where to go from there. I don't like being wrong — I'd love to get things right (which is different than "being right"). I recommend grabbing a furniture slider or a paper plate or something, and doing something like this: First, make a swing where you let your trail foot swing out as you turn, then twist that foot back in. From DL and FO, it'll look like this: Then, during a regular backswing, try to twist your foot in slightly (demonstrated in the left image): You'll notice a crease along the trail side of your hip, your pelvis will "fold" into that thigh (internal rotation of the hip joint), and your "bits" will be squished a little between your pelvis and your thigh. Ben Hogan said once: "At the top of the back swing the groin muscle on the inside of your rt [sic] leg near your right nut will tighten," Hogan wrote. "This subtle feeling of tightness there tells you that you have made the correct move back from the ball." I don't know about that, but you will probably feel something down around that area.
    • Yep. I think it will start to feel even more athletic when we start on the downswing stuff later.  I know, it's just I want to be younger so I have more time to enjoy the changes. 🙂
    • I need to drop a couple of stone. 🙂 😛    Yep. Yeah, but in the end, it feels more athletic, like you're actually using your legs, yeah? As you know… we use the best available info we have. Like others, I was fooled a little by 2D images for awhile (moving or still). Unlike others, I've learned and grown and moved on since then, while they're still looking at their images (often from lousy camera angles).
    • Day 12 - 2025-12-31 Limited time today, and heavy rains here. 5-10 minutes of mirror work for full swing, working on trail side.
