Sounds like you're afraid that if you actually sink a putt, it will damage your ball. A golf ball is tough! Go ahead and knock it in the hole.

If you read Rick Riley's "Who your Caddy" there is a few funny bits about "Keep your Mouth off my ball. Blake (Big Break) saying "Keep your lip off my ball." was the same thing. Basically what they are saying is you shouldn't talk to another person ball and ask it to "get up" "bite" "Cut" etc.

Blake is a jerk, but the idea of not talking to someone elses ball is decent advice as it can be anoying. In "who's your caddy" it talks about three things a caddy can say that won't anoy their golfer:

1. "My fault" - after a bad shot
2. "Great shot" - after a good shot
3. "You got F******" - after a good shot that goes bad

This is something that I do with my normal group (we all do actually) and I've never seen the harm in it. My playing partners will say "GET UP!" if I hit a less than perfect shot and it's never even come close to pissing me off.

I guess I could see how it would be annoying but really, getting there's other things you could get upset over. It's not like someone talking to your ball has any affect on the outcome of the shot. So, aside from simply being annoyed at the fact that your playing companion said it and you taking it as them being a smart ass (which isn't likely the case) I don't see why someone would get so mad?

There's a guy that plays in the City Championship here and I've heard stories of people putting their mouth on his ball. Evidently someone said something to one of his shots/putt while it was still in motion toward the target and he turns and goes off on them: "don't ever f****** talking to my ball again."

I guess you saw the Big Break this week? That Blake dude needs to go. He might be much better than he appears, but his attitude is pathetic.

It may not warrant a "Don't ever f****** talk to my ball again!", but I find it very annoying when someone says "Good Ball" or something similar, but you know you missed it, and it's NOT a good shot. Then the ball ends up being far worse then you initially imagined.

In "Who's your Caddy" Reilly's first assignment at the Masters for Tommy Aaron.Reilly "talks" to Aaron chip shot chip shot. as the book says: "Keep your mouth off my ball," Aaron scolded. "Don't talk to it. I want it to get up as much as you do. It doesn't help me to know that you're over there, telling it to get up or get down or whatever. It just adds to the pressure."

That is the rational in the book for not wanting "mouth on your ball". I can't say I agree as in highschool...... well the joke writes itself.

I just humour it. Some of the older guys I occasionally play with exclaim "FANTASTIC SHOT" before anyone has had a chance to see where the ball went. I like it when my playing partners say "Get up there" or "Down, down".

lol. I just think someone has some serious mental problems is this bothers them.

I've never felt any additional pressure or anything because of someone saying something to my ball while it's in the air.

I agree. Unless I know someone (or until I get to know a stranger's attitude during a round) I try to be pretty quiet about their shots. There's nothing wrong with trying to be positive, but I think the comments can be misconstrued as criticisms of the shot. In any case it announces that someone is "watching" and for some people that can be an additional source of uneasiness. When I'm playing with strangers, I sort of hope they're not too concerned with my shots.

Of course, the totally inappropriate "good shots" on near-shanks are just plain annoying...

I agree. I just think that's an excuse for arrogant people. Ooh, well this pro said it, so that means its ok. W/e pro said that is a jerk too. Being good at something doesn't give you the right to get upset about someone trying to be supportive.

Also, you can usually tell how well a ball was struck by the sound it makes at impact. That's probably why "older guys" say that. I know I was playing, hit a 3 iron off the tee (and I'm a terrible player), but I struck this ball perfectly and the guy instantly said, "great shot." We've all hit the ball perfectly, but b/c we expected to hit it bad, we took too much club and hit over the green. Imo that's still a good shot, just the wrong club. Then again, I'm not quite the perfectionist that Blake is.

    • Day 24: did a stack session. Worked a bit on downswing feels during breaks.
    • Day 444 - 2025-12-18 Light day of hotel room work. GEARS Summit v2.0 today. Good day.
    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
