Demo'd a 909DComp today with the Matrix Ozik 5 in Stiff flex. Had a few great drives with it, but it seemed a bit "loose" to me. Some big hooks/pushes that didn't seem due to the swing. Does this shaft built for Titleist play the same as the "real" Oziks? I liked how it felt in general, but thinking a step up to a Ozik 6 may be in order.

I bought a Callaway FTi with the Ozik ICON 6 in the spring. I heard the aftermarket shafts were "different" than the clubs that came with the shafts from the manufacturer. I emailed Matrix and they said they were the exact same shafts. I suspect when folks go to a shop and pay big bucks for an aftermarket shaft, they want to think it is something special. I understand this, but directly from the source, they are the same exact shafts. I can forward you the email from Matrix if you PM me your email address. These are awesome shafts and I have never hit the ball so straight. I have hit it a bit further, but never with so much accuracy.

Yes, I would recommend the matrix 6, the heavier shaft.

I have always heard that the shafts installed in the oem product is almost never the same shaft as the aftermarket version.

The stock Titleist shaft offerings are different from their exotic (extra money) cousins, but not by much. The stock shafts typically are lighter in weight and have a higher torque. For 99% of the golfing world, one of the stock shaft offerings is going to be just fine, as your average player won't know the difference.

With that said, I believe the XCON 5 has a soft tip and is lighter in weight than the XCON 6. However, it really depends on your needs. I had the XCON 6 stock shaft in my 909D3 originally and didn't care for it. I had a low ball flight and it just didn't feel good to me.

I'd probably recommend going with the XCON 6, but without seeing you swing or seeing the ball flight, it's really a guess at best. Go get fitted properly by a good club fitter is the best option.

The Matrix Ozik 5 is a lighter shaft and produces a higher ball flight. A previous post recommended the Ozik 6, the heavier shaft. This all depends on the ball flight you are wanting to achieve.

Ozik 5 for a lighter shaft (< 60g) and high ball flight
Ozik 6 for a heavier shaft(60+ g) and a mid ball flight

Hopefully in a couple of weeks I'll be able to relay some first hand opinions.

I hit a Dcomp with the Ozik 5. I was impressed with the stick but the flight was a bit high at the end an the ball would simply drop out of the sky. It was a driver that was virtually all carry.

I wanted a bit more of a parabella shot shape....not drastically different than the club tested but just a bit flatter at the peak and less decent angle that should yield more roll.

I went with the 6. I hope I did the right thing. The Voodoo just felt like too much shaft for my swing.

We'll see when the club arrives.

A "by Titleist shaft" is manufactured by the company together with Titleist to maximise the club's performance. A heavier shaft can help in your case. As deronsizemore suggested I' get properly fitted. Maybe the D2 or D3 will fit your swing better.
If the trajectory with the Ozik is too high, I would probably try the Ozik 6.

the ozik 6 is just heavier, it shouldnt do a ton to bring your ball flight down, its only like a 7-9 gram difference. if you wanna bring the ball flight down, get a code 6, or an F6M2, those will be the medium launching shafts.

    • Thanks but honestly… I don't know any other way. I don't mind being wrong so long as I know where to go from there. I don't like being wrong — I'd love to get things right (which is different than "being right"). I recommend grabbing a furniture slider or a paper plate or something, and doing something like this: First, make a swing where you let your trail foot swing out as you turn, then twist that foot back in. From DL and FO, it'll look like this: Then, during a regular backswing, try to twist your foot in slightly (demonstrated in the left image): You'll notice a crease along the trail side of your hip, your pelvis will "fold" into that thigh (internal rotation of the hip joint), and your "bits" will be squished a little between your pelvis and your thigh. Ben Hogan said once: "At the top of the back swing the groin muscle on the inside of your rt [sic] leg near your right nut will tighten," Hogan wrote. "This subtle feeling of tightness there tells you that you have made the correct move back from the ball." I don't know about that, but you will probably feel something down around that area.
    • Yep. I think it will start to feel even more athletic when we start on the downswing stuff later.  I know, it's just I want to be younger so I have more time to enjoy the changes. 🙂
    • I need to drop a couple of stone. 🙂 😛    Yep. Yeah, but in the end, it feels more athletic, like you're actually using your legs, yeah? As you know… we use the best available info we have. Like others, I was fooled a little by 2D images for awhile (moving or still). Unlike others, I've learned and grown and moved on since then, while they're still looking at their images (often from lousy camera angles).
