After reading the newest wedge review from the main site, i wanted to really test what feel means to a wedge. So i got out my Mizuno MP-R LW, my Spin Milled Vokey Oil Can SW, and an old Nike SV LW to see what they feel like. I picked these because the Mizuno is forged, the Vokey is cast, and i dont know what the Nike is. (All is says on it are SV and Milled (i assume the grooves)). I hit full shots with them all using the same range balls and quickly realized that there was no difference.

I then decided to try some juggling and realized that indeed they did feel different, the Mizuno softer, the Vokey harder and the Nike in between. I even tried it with an old set of cast Orlimar irons and they were rock hard.

I think though one difference was sound. The Orlimars had a pronounced click that no others had, though the Mizunos really did feel softer.

So has anyone ever tried this? It might be a good way to test softeness, though i cant figure out why only lightly hitting it would make it easier to feel. Maybe a full swing goes over some force threshold where it is happening to fast to feel any difference? I dont really know.

Or maybe its all in my head (perception rather than sensation) ...

Thats strange. I have always found that wedges feel the same(or near it). I have only felt a real diffirent feel when struck solidly. But bouncing the ball on the clubface is an easy way to hit it solid so that would explain the different feel... but given your handicap id think that youd make flush contact at the least 1 of every 5 swings. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS IN ANY WAY TO OFFEND YOU. I could be wrong though(i am often lol).

As I said in the review, there's no actual proof that anyone can tell the difference.

Sound is also something like 90% of what we call "feel" too. That was in Golf Digest or something a few years ago - they even piped in the sounds of "softer" clubs and people said super-firm clubs were indeed "softer" and all sorts of stuff. It's 90% in your head. The rest is weighting and the design of the club, some the shaft, the grip, the swingweight... With wedges, the heads are almost all alike.

I've always just associated the firmness of a wedge to the weight. I have to agree that it's totally a head thing and I'm pretty sure given enough time I could grow into any wedge. (given the bounces are the same)

I have gone through Hogan Apex -> Mizuno MP -> Taylormade TP -> MP T.
Meanwhile, I had tested Cleveland CG12 and Vokey Spin Milled time to time.

For me, I hit better and solid when it's head is certain shape. I don't know the exact spec. for all those wedges but their head shapes are certainly differed at address. I prefer little closeness on toe as MP or TP styles. Vokey and CG12 looks little open on the toe. Better struck shot always feel better and softer.

hm... As I think of it, I may prefer little closed toe look wedges because I have straight or little out-to-in swing. Possible?
