scottsdale trip rec

looking to play a trip to scottsdale in the last week of february. Any suggestions would be appreciated. A couple of criteria.

- will be there for four days, but only 2 with my buddies since i am sandwiched this between some business meetings.
- looking for 2-3 courses where i should be able to get on as a single. (and ideally play 36 a day) This is probably where i would want to play the harder courses since my friend don't find as much enjoyment in playing courses rated 75 or higher.


- looking for 2 courses for my friends; would like one of them to be more playable for a 20+ handicapping. (in other words, not ridiculous target golf).

I just golfed Gold Canyon in November with all of us being 20+ hdcp. We had a fantastic time. The courses are in beautiful shape and the staff was excellent. We golfed both Sidewinder and Dinosaur Mountain while we were there and I don't have any complaints with either course.

My recommendation for sure, but I don't have anything else in Phoenix to compare to.

At the end of the day I don't think it really matters if the course is a little too hard for your friends. A few extra lost balls and a not so great score is better than not golfing at all.

I hightly recommend Gold Canyon (both courses) and Wee-Ko-Pa (both courses)

My must play recommendation for visitors (and residents) is the Saguaro course at We-Ko-Pa. This Coore & Crenshaw design is both challenging and playable, offering generous width off the tee that not too intimidating for the high handicapper. This course will give you a great flavor of Arizona golf in a natural desert setting, set upon and making thoughtful use of the rolling foothill terrain with gorgeous views of the surrounding mountains, and best of all - without housing intrusion.

Be advised, the other course at We-Ko-Pa is the Cholla, also a top design but a much more stern test of golf.

Troon is my favorite course out there. and Grayhawk. i LOVED playing those courses. they are freaking GORGEOUS

Wekopa Saguaro is one of my all time favorites. If you want a battle play Cholla. The views are incredible though. I also played both courses at Talking Stick. Cheaper than Wekopa and both courses were in great shape. They just didnt have the dramatic holes like Wekopa does. Cant go wrong out there.

I also don't think the Talon course is anything special. Have you played Vista Verde? Check it out on your next visit, I'm thinking it will crack your top ten.

I see you have Troon on there, both courses. If you aren't worried about money, is the TPC Stadium course worth it, or is Troon still better?

I prefer the Troon courses to TPC. However, I like We-Ko-Pa even more. TPC Stadium is fun and if you follow the PGA tour it's cool tp play the holes you know from TV. But from a pure day of golf experience We-ko-Pa is my first choice.

A bunch of the courses are not actually in Scottsdale. The Boulders is in Carefree, We-Ko-Pa is on a reservation east of Fountain Hills. If a course is within 45 minutes of Scottsdale, I considered it "Scottsdale" fro purposes of the list. I also prefer Raptor to talon. I like Talon but it is further down the list. Vista Verde is excellent.

I will be in Scottsdale in February as well, anyone have any idea if TPC scottsdale stadium course is worth $250 to play? I know the FBR open will be at the end of February as well, so might not even be an option.

You'll probably like TPC, but for the money there are so many better options: We-Ko-Pa, Troon North, Boulders, Grayhwak and Talking Stick.

If anyone is interested I called TPC Scottsdale and last day open to the public before the FBR Open will be Feb 18th. Then closed till early March. Personally I can't see spending the $280 for that course when others have suggested equal or better courses for cheaper.

I was considering instead of playing a round at TPC Scottsdale taking two lessons at $110 an hour. Anyone have experience with the pros at TPC Scottsdale and can vouch for them.

Question for the forum, would you rather play at the TPC Stadium Course or take two lessons?
