Can someone explain why if I hit the standard (black) iron well that when custom fit the clubs should be more up right (yellow)? what affect will that have on my shots and how much time will it take to get used too? will I be hooking or drawing everything? the thing I took away was the rep said most of my shots with the standard were close to the toe by being upright will hit the ball in the sweet spot.

Why didn't you ask to take the demo iron to the range and see what real world results look like?

I'm sure they'd let you check it out for a range session.

I was a bit leary of my fitting session, too, when he said I needed maroon. I ordered them anyway and knew that he could adjust them two degrees if needed when they arrived.

Guess what....I never got them adjusted. I simply gamed them and loved 'em.

One thing that I found helped me....may not do anything for you...I got immediate great results when I adressed the ball slightly closer in to my body. My older irons had me reaching further for it. It only took a small change....and inch or two and results were solid.

Good luck.

When I was fitted @ Ping for my S57s they recommended silver dots ( +3 3/4 up), which were 3/4 degrees more upright than my previous club. Long story short(er), I started hitting a slightly higher ball with a slight draw, and didn't change a thing. Loved it.

New irons are 3.5 degrees upright, but the slight draw is still there albeit with a slightly lower trajectory. So, either 1/4 degree lie change is not that significant, or I'm not good enough to notice the difference.

That is why they were custom fit sir. You see, the black dots could've had you hitting solid, but YOU adjusted TO the club, not the club TO YOU! It'll help your game for sure, trust me. I'm a green dot and before I got fitted, my game was pretty solid, but I was hitting standard Titleist blades, which I had to adjust myself to. As soon as I got my Ping's the results were amazing. My game improved dramatically and my ball striking became more solid and more consistent. It's great. Just have confidence in yourself and don't even worry about the change. Good luck with your class.

I was going to start a new thread, but my question is also about Ping fitting.

If I wanted to buy, say, a used set of G2 irons on ebay, how could I figure out which color dot fits me best? Can I go into a golf shop and have them fit me, and then just go buy used clubs elsewhere?

I think you can send your clubs to the PING factory and they will adjust them to your specs for a small charge. Check their website.

Go to the PING website. They have an online fitting that will get you close. You will find the color chart for the lie angle as well as grip size.

OK, my static fit is blue dot (.75 up) and white grip (standard). But that could change when I swing a club during fitting right? Or is a static fit close enough if I plan on buying used clubs?

The static fit assumes some things like setup, posture, etc. According to their static measurements, I'm should be about 2 up (green dot?), but because of my back, I stand up a little taller and swing a little closer to my toes, hence the need for the extra degrees up.

You could be completely different, but the static will get you started. If you feel they need to be adjusted, any good shop can do it if they have a good bending machine. (I watched them do it at Ping, and the guy was bending them with a mallet!)

I'm 6'4.5" tall and the fitting works, also as your swing improves, it will flatten so you can just have the lie adjusted as needed. I have had my lie adjusted 1.5degrees flatter from the maroon merely due to my swing plane becoming flatter and becoming more comfortable with the ball set up farther away. Also be sure of your grip size when you get them. When I was fitted, an oversized grip was suggested and was so ordered. I recently had the clubs regripped with standard sized grips. The oversized grips were allowing the club face to rotate open upon contact because I was unable to get a proper grip on the club. This also was quite uncomfortable.
If you wear a L sized glove, stay with the standard size; XL or larger glove look at oversized grips. Good Luck.

The static fitting for me was orange dot with a standard "white" grip. I bought a set of used G-10's with Orange dots. After playing with them, I went to ping to get fitted and my lie got flatter to gold dot and I use just a slightly bigger grip. The static gets you close. You don't want to buy a 3* upright and try to bend it to 3* flat. That's a long way.
