today is a sunday.

on thursday i bought a 56 cleveland cg-15.

i bought it to "replace" my vokey 56 that i felt had worn down. i was quite excited by the "laser" grooves. alright... day one (thursday) i took it out around the practice green before a round. wow!! i was spinning, and so were the balls. it was really extremely cool. i'd hit my shots, the ball would land and 'zip' stop. really amazing. remind you, the wedge was new - these were range balls - 'zip' - stop. all i was thinking was "this is a weapon." and it was - key word... "was." i went out that day and was to be reckoned with. i was chipping with aplomb. my balls were awesome around the green. my approach shots (110yds full shot, 9 o'clock punch 70yds), and all chips were just crazy.

i was so excited i almost couldn't sleep that night... friday came i had to play. i looked at the wedge and saw noticeable wear - i thought "this sucks." i did my normal warm up - shots at the range, chips at the chipping green, play my round. good round. saturday came - my usual round with the buds. the normal routine - full shots at the range, chipping around the green. i played and observed a used wedge. it'd been three days... saturday's round was all but devoid of the earth shaking spin. yeah, i could spin because of quality contact, but the wedge was visibly used - quite used. three days for $119?? are you serious?

day one, i would rake my finger nail across the face - i could feel the laser grooves. today, rake my finger nail and the laser grooves are gone in the sweet spot - yes, gone. is this a gimmick?

also, when i bought the wedge i wanted to get it 2 up, but the club guy said "cleveland recommended only a 1 degree change, and if you needed more to order it." i asked "if it breaks who's responsible?" he pointed at me... i know these are cast, but if cleveland is telling a massive store like this that it's a customer's fault if the store breaks the club before the customer even strikes a ball with it, "ah hem..." what is wrong???

i called my PGA Tour Superstore (duluth, ga) and luckily they have a return policy - 30 day playability guarantee. i returned this made in china piece of (bleep) and got a spin milled vokey - 56/11. it might also be made in china, but i feel more comfortable with a vokey since that's what i was replacing... so the vokey is in my bag and i'm done with cleveland.

i'm not in the golfing industry - i don't work for titleist or cleveland, and have no vested interest in either company's products.

Wow!, That sucks. I bought the Bobby Jones/Pelz wedges and I like em. They seem tough enough to play with for a while.

It ain't bragging if you can do it.

i have yet to try the cg15 wedge, however i am in love with cleveland wedges so this disappoints me to hear about this. i can however vouche for both the durability of the cg10 wedges(that i play still) and the cg12 i had for over a year before switching to a different wedge set up. my wedges are 2 years old and i believe they still spin just as good as the day i got them. too bad to hear about the cg15, i was really looking forward to trying them out.

Yeah that stinks. I've actually been really depressed on how fast the Vokey Tour Chrome wedges have worn. I can't believe the CG15 are worse. Thanks for the warning.

On the other hand, I will have to disagree about the lie adjustment. They've got to draw the line somewhere, and I'm sure some engineer at Cleveland said that it was only safe to adjust them 1* at the store, and that's why they're doing it. What if it was 2* and you wanted 3* upright? The line has to be drawn somewhere, and it just so happens that your spec isn't within that limit. I can understand you wanting to get what you want, but 2* on a wedge is alot. I'm sure they didn't make that policy to avoid liability, but because they thought it would really be an issue. They said they can do it for you, but you just have to order it straight from them.

I got a CG12 earlier this year and noticed a ton of spin right away and I was really psyched about it. That only lasted a week or so. I first thought maybe I had adjusted to the spin and it became "normal", but I realized it was spinning a little less. I still play with the wedge and love it, but it doesn't have that same action it did when i unwrapped it. I don't notice any visible wear or dullness of the grooves so I am stickin with it for now.

just to clarify... the cg15 is a fine wedge, a very fine wedge. the feel was great and so was the performance. the issue i had is that the laser grooves (the very tiny grooves on the face, not the actual cut grooves themselves) wore off within three days of use.

from my perspective:
a) it's pointless for cleveland to market these things like they do.
b) if you have a wedge that you like, stick with it unless it's worn out and needs replacing anyway.

alright, i am a complicated mess. i got the vokey 56.11, used it for a full two rounds and i must say that it doesn't work for me quite like the cg15. yes, the cg15 lost it's zip grooves pretty quick, but in the end i must say the cg15 felt and responded better. it must be the difference between cast and forged, because really that's the only difference.

so, not sure how to undo my original post but guys, the cg15 is my choice... PGA Tour Superstore must love me... i bought the cg15, returned it for the vokey, returned it for the cg15. cg15 is it for me...

lets not confuse people even further here, you just mentioned that the LASER grooves wore off in three days, this is already confusing people and putting a bad reputation out there, lets just make sure that people understand that it is NOT the zip grooves that wore out so fast...

Feel is such a personal thing. If you try the new Mizzy wedges you might like them better. I'd suggest trying as many wedges as you can before deciding on one. And hang on, the CG15 isn't forged, is it?

neither are forged

the only forged wedges i can think of are the Nike VR's, Callaway X's and some Clevelands (588 or 900 i dont remember) PRetty much every other one is cast.

I feel the exact opposite. I love the Vokeys and Clevelands and it seems like I can't hit a good shot with the Mizunos. But wedges are so personal...

ballhog... i hope i'm not confusing anyone. the small micro-grooves did wear off. however, the club has a better feel, and in the end i'd rather have better feel for consistency sake than pristine tiny little goves. take care now, bye bye then...

    • Day 79 (19 July 25) - Band rehearsal this morning - got home midafternoon, opted to work more with the magnetic alignment tool with the wedges.  Used it to work on face position at the bottom of the swing arc - followed up with easy pitches up to 50yds.  Seeing better face control and over improved accuracy toward target…session was cut short with pop up rain showers.
    • This is a great discussion. Other parts of the course where there are houses have white stakes and signs. This keeps people from trespassing and hitting shots on their property. There is another county road on the east side of the course that does not have white stakes like the hole I described. I checked the score card and there is nothing to indicate these roadways are OB. I think a county drainage ditch would be considered government right-of-way so it is the peoples land 🤣. But you are in the power industry and know more about those sorts of things than me.
    • Day 3: Worked on backswing. Feel: Matt Wolff, Real: Not yanking it inside and getting it laid off and flat at the top.
    • I wrote the post before leaders tee'd off today (3rd round) when Schef was still tied with Fitz at -10. Also, if you read further I also said 'one man' will most probably put the championship to sleep by end of today..😊. Yeah, not much drama left it seems. Scheffler with a hot putter is out right frustrating for the field. I will still watch tomorrow because the course is awesome and the play is pretty exciting in general. Players reaching deep to hang on.
