I am a newbie around here but I really need some help on my decision with drivers. I have a Titleist 983K 10.5 degree driver.. aka the most crackable driver that Titleist has ever made… with a large crack in it towards the top of the face. This crack led me to buy a new driver, the Taylormade r5 dual and the change has been very difficult. The bigger club head is really difficult for me to control and the slice on the r5 is a terrible weak one, and the 983K barely slices unless I put a very bad swing on it. Also, it seems a bit too light so here is my problem. Which driver should I use? Also, I am contemplating putting a heavier shaft to match their weights or possibly a good amount of led tape on the driver, possibly the side that would stop me from slicing? I need some ideas because high school golf season is soon!

For right now i would go with the one that you hit better especially if its not just practice and do you have 2 high school seasons because I only have one just in the fall and now im getting ready for college golf next fall. But whenever your seasons over i would try to get used to the new driver because the old one sound like its on its last leg.

If you are thinking about reshafting I would suggest finding a good clubfitter in the area to make sure you get it right. I don't know how things work elsewhere, but places I've looked at around here usually include the fitting if you have them do the reshafting.

I can relate because I play a 983E Titleist, and have trouble hitting the huge 460cc drivers. The 983e and 983k drivers are pretty cheap if you can find them on ebay or something.

    • We had a member of our senior club who developed a mental block on pulling the trigger. I played with him to see what the membership was talking about. I timed him a few times when he would get over the ball. 45 seconds. He knew he had a mental block and would chide himself, “Just hit it!” Once on the green he was okay and chipping was a bit better. It was painful to watch him struggle. Our “bandaid” was to put him in the last tournament  tee time with two understanding players. We should have suggested to him to take a break from our tournaments. I agree with the idea that when a player realizes they have a problem, the answer is to go fix it and not return until they are able to play at an acceptable pace.
