Putting has been my biggest weakness all year long. I averaged about 36 putts per round.

I found a new putter than I thought fit me really well. The length, lie.. everything. I slapped some lead tape on the bottom of it to add a little bit of weight. I putted around the house with it for a week before I had a chance to get to the course.

When I played Thursday, I had a new driver, new 3 wood, and new putter in the bag. A pretty big change.

I shot my 3rd best score of the year and had only 30 putts. On the front nine, I actually had only 11 putts and shot 1 under. I made 3 putts from over 15 ft. I couldn't believe it.

On the back 9, I still had two 3 putts. Both were due to really bad approach shots that put me on the wrong part of multi-tiered greens. I wasn't too upset about my putting on those.

I also had two putts that were over 30ft and just lipped out. Not only was I making putts, but the ones that I missed were stopping just inches from the hole for kick ins. It felt so good to have that confidence back that you can make anything you look at.

Likely you found a putter that fits your playing style better giving you more comfort and thus more confidence.

Not to burst your bubble, but this might be the honey moon period. It won't be long before your putting gets back to what it was before. I had the same feeling with my new putter for the first couple of weeks.

I hope I am mistaken, but just to let you know

Theres no better feeling standing over a putt feeling confident that you can make a putt from anywhere on the green. We should all be so lucky to have the feeling everytime we putt.

You are a 5 handicap averaging 36 putts a round? I would kill for your driving/ball striking then... congrats on the new putter.

Golfaway, you and I share the same pessimism for this sport! Anytime I try a new putter, I am lights out for a few rounds. Then it goes to hell.

I found an old Macgregor putter with a convex face in a trash can and was making everything for a few rounds. A week later I was missing 2 footers with this piece of junk. Of course, anything that gives you confidence is a good thing. Hope you keep draining those putts Nyper.

36 might be a slight exaggeration.. but looking back at my stats for the year, 75% of my rounds probably had 35-37 putts. I've had several rounds where I shot low and kept my handicap down. Those were largely due to hitting fairways and greens. Last round I played I only missed 1 fairway - and I was only 5ft off the fairway in the light rough. I hit the green on every par 3.

The past two rounds I've played I've been under par on one side, then flubbed up the other side with 3 putts.

This is not a problem. you need to go out and buy 10 to 15 putters...retate them every 3 to 6 rounds...you always have a new putter in you bag that "works"...and you will always be a good putter!! Simple game.

Aloha all,
when it comes to putting (as well as a lot of other things in life) the key is confidence. Whatever putter you use, if it feels good you will get confident, but as soon as you have a couple of bad days due to whatever circomstance your confidence will drop and your putting will suffer. That will be the time when you start experimenting wiht new putter again. This is so common amongst us players and you do see it on tour every weekend. Keep the focus and confidence up - i.e. if you still miss a couple fo short putts just make sure to tell yourself that it was on line or speed was good etc and eventually they will start dropping again. Key is not the clubs, key is the player and the mindset, but yes we all love those new clubs - it is so much fun :)
