..are they the same? I'm planning on substituting my 23 deg. 4i with a 23 deg. hybrid..or am I not seeing the right picture here?

It depends on your swing, the specs of the iron you're replacing, and of the hybrid you're replacing it with. Some people can really smoke long irons.

My guess is that you're like most golfers and the 23 hybrid will fly farther - 1 to 2 clubs farther.

Also, easier with hybrid from rough, but less accuracy compared to iron.

A 27º hybrid should do the trick for your 4 iron distance in this case.

Apparently I'm the exception. My 3-iron was only going about 5 yards farther than my 4-iron. But my Adams hybrid, which is one degree lower loft, only goes about 5 yards farther than my 3-iron. I hit my hybrid more accurately and it's much better into the wind, so it's still a big upgrade over my 3-iron, but my loft/distance relationship is about the same with my 3-iron and hybrid. Before I got this Adams, I was hitting a Snake Eyes Quick Strike 18* hybrid and got about 5 more yards out of it than I do this Adams, but it was an all-steel head. But, I had an 18* hybrid replacing a 21* 3-iron, so I guess I'm the exception, but not everyone hits the hybrids a club or 2 farther.

I recently got a Callaway FT 3 and 4 hybrid from Callaway Preowned in "like new" (brand new) condition for $75/each. Awesome clubs and I am hitting them further than the 3 and 4 iron they replaced. More importantly, much more consistent and higher trajectory. Something that would actually stick on a green from 190-215. I would agree with the earlier comment about hybrids being 1-2 clubs longer. But again, the most important benefit I am seeing, I can hit these FAR easier and more consistently. I was missing out big time by not adding a few hybrids earlier.

From what I've been told and, my experience swapping out my 3i for a 3h the hybrid goes about 10-15 m further, or about one club for me. I've been told its mainly because of the shafts in the hybrids, they are a bit longer than the iron equivalent, and normally graphite. If you got one with the same shaft as the iron, it should be pretty much the same.
