The classic drill is just work on half shots and focus on set up. Just hit little punches with a mid iron and focus on taking a divot after the ball. You have to have your hands in front of the ball. When things are going well I feel like I stay very much on top of the ball. I am going to experment with S&T; and alot of the things make sense. I want to bring consistancy to my game and I hope it does it. Love the book and recommend. The key to hitting down is the hips moving towards the target prior to impact. I am not a great ball striker. I just know what they do.

Hope this helps. Best of luck playing in your lousy weather. What is it, 70 and sunny.

Brian

No, it's 59 and bitter! The only thing that should ever be below 72 is a golf score!

I agree, hitting down on the ball is important, so I have a favorite drill. Get a board, and tee up a ball at the level of that board. I can't draw to save my life, but here's an example: You have to hit down or else you'll hit the board, and skull the ball. It's fierce, but it works.

59 and bitter??? Come on. It is 22 and there isn't a day above 30 in the 10 day. I haven't playing in a month. There isn't even a driving range I can go to.

Nice drill.

Brian

I wore 3 jackets this morning on the way to work. 59 is COOOOOLLDD!

Thanks for the drills guys, Im gonna get to the range on Thursday and work on that stuff. Lefty, are you referring to the 9-3 drill? Havent dont that one in a while

59 isn't cold.

Not exactly 3 to 9. It is basicly just working on hitting half shots. It is alot easier to feel where the clubhead is and feel what good impact is. The feeling I would be trying to get is the back of my right hand facing the target through the ball and really feel the turf after impact. I would use a club for alignment and pick a target maybe 80 yards and use an 8 iron or so. I like playing these shots slightly open and I am trying to hit a almost dead straight ball with no hook, maybe a yard or two of fade. When doing it, make sure you are taking a divot after the ball. That is the goal. Then try to get that same feeling of hitting down on full shots. Maybe alternate back and forth.

Brian

Right on, thanks man, Im really looking forward to doing this on Thursday. Seems like it will really help my ball striking.

I'll report back thursday night, and hopefully it goes well.

You cold have your hands in line with the shaft or slightly behind it which would open the face a little at address and add loft to the club. I have done this a few times over the years and I just try to make sure my hands are well ahead of the ball at address and you make contact in this same position, contacting the ball first with your divot after the ball. For added distance for me, I also make sure I get plenty of wrist cock in my take a way.

Just remember that 50ΒΊ down here in south florida feels like 35ΒΊ anywhere else...especially Ohio...

Great drill, I'll have to try this one out. I too have been having trouble with my distances lately as well. I'm still taking a divot, but I think it has to do with my release. I've been quite frustrated about the whole thing, but I should be starting a new set of lessons soon so I'll hopefully get it figured out. It's 32 today in Orlando and i swear it feels like it 20 out.

I wish it was in the 50s here. I went to the driving range today and it was 39.

I brought a club I'm reviewing, the Tour Striker Pro. The review is not out yet, but here's a preview. Practicing with this club is the only reason I've found for actually using range mats. It really does help to ingrain the hands forward and hitting down on the ball swing. If you flip the club head, you're going to hit a worm burner with it. The only way to get the ball up in the air with this club is to have the shaft leaning forward at impact with your hands ahead. I was hitting my 8-iron in the cold, about 165-170, with range balls. The ball flight was a nice flat draw that carried forever. Beautiful thing to watch. As I said, I'm not a fan of range mats. I avoid them like the plague and even bring my own mat to the range (a country club elite mat) and a stance mat because that combo actually feels like hitting off fairway. Anyway, the best ball strikers have the shaft leaning forward and the hands ahead at impact. Work on that, it will give you real distance, solid compression and improve your ball striking in general.

Is that tour striker pro a training aid? Thanks for the reply.

You can go their website,

www.tourstriker.com , there's a button there at the bottom for ordering. They have a couple of different models. I'm reviewing the pro model. I should have the review done in a few days.

Wow, I guess it works now, yesterday I clicked that button and the page wasnt found.

100 bucks is a bit steep for me right now, If I KNEW it would work, I'd buy it, but its a lot to spend just to hope it works.

Looking forward to the review, seems like a very solid training aid.

    • Nothing exposes low point control, and for that matter the general quality of ball striking like tight lies. Lol! I am at a crossroad. My days of playing with a super strong left hand grip are coming to an end it seems. I'm finding it increasingly difficult to maintain proper face control through impact as the club face naturally wants to turn over. The quality of strike and ball flight difference when I weaken the grip is stark. Problem is a weaker grip is at odds with my poor sore left forearm which I have been nursing for last few days after 3 days of demanding golf. As of now I will continue my 'transition' to a weaker grip with woods and hopefully my forearm will condition as I go along. Maybe someday I'll get to a normal address with irons too.Β
