Odyssey vs Scotty

Hey guys, I'm trying to decide what putter to buy because my old one's face is scratched up. I have looked through a lot of putters and have come down to two contenders, The Odyssey Black Series Tour Designs #9 and the Scotty Cameron California Del Mar. I have tried them both at Golfdom, and they both feel fantastic. The Odyssey's weighting was perfect and the feel was great as well. The Scotty to me had better feel but the weight was too heavy and i liked the Odyssey's head shape and color better. Although i know you can change the weighting, you can't change the head design.

My question to you is, which would you choose if you were in my shoes and why and/or which would you choose for yourself and why. Thanks!

Fairway woods: X-Fairway 3 and 5
Irons: : X-Forged '09 3-PW in Carolina Blue, Oklahoma Orange, and Wake Forest Green grips.

It sounds like to me that you want the Del Mar, but the Odyssey performs/sets up better for you. In fact the only thing you like better about the Scotty is the feel...which I concede is important. But you also say the Odyssey is great.

If you can live with the Odyssey then I'd go with it based on what you wrote. And you save about $30.

I got a Scotty as a Christmas present a few years ago and haven't ever looked back. All that being said, the ONLY backup putter I keep is an Odyssey 2-Ball DFX Blade that I love too. Putting is mostly about confidence and if your feel is about the same with either, then go with whichever would give you more confidence. If there is a drastic difference in how they feel in your hands, pick the one with the better feel.

Me loves my "Scottie". What I like best is the feel for distance I get with it. Another good thing about the Camerons, is they seem to hold their value better.

Is your current putter face, that's scratched, beyond repair? If not, it seems like the Odyssey would be better for you based on your comments.

If you want to make people jealous, buy the cameron. If you want to make more putts, buy the Odyssey.

Without any hesitation, I will choose Odyssey since you are looking at mallet putters. I was also searching for a putter and tried many different models from Odyssey & Scotty few months ago, Odyssey had much better feel and consistency. But I prefer blade type putter and am sticking with my current Ping putter.

It's not about snob appeal; that lasts 5 minutes. it's about what feels right. I've had them all, and the best feeling putter I've ever had is the Scotty Newport Fastback. It is just butter when struck correctly, which is an advantage in itself. now I'll tell you, I'm frugal, and very much a person not impressed by names. In fact, I'm always knocking down institutions that others swear by, including Scotty Cameron putters. But damn it, I've NEVER felt as good about a putter as my new Fastback. I've had Odysseys - they're nice. And Yes, and all the rest. The softest feel, the most confidant feeling, I get only with my Cameron Fastback. It took me a couple weeks to get that feeling, but I wouldn't trade it for anything - at any price.

My personal preference is always with the Scotty, it has an exception feel and when you miss putts you know for sure that it is not your putter but your hands.

What is in my Audi golf bag:
1. Ping I15 8 degree with Fubuki

2. Miura 15 degree with Fubuki

Go Scotty....you can always sell it for nearly what you paid for it if it doesn't work out. Putting is all about feel and confidence. Sounds like you like the feel of the Scotty better.

      Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.

      I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.

      In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.

      Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
