I ordered DG X-100's today for my irons. I had the chance to get the Tour Issue shafts, which are frequency matched instead of weight matched said the rep at the store. The frequency matched shaft would run about $5 more/shaft. I went with the standard X-100, kind of because they are cheaper and kind of because the rep said it probably wasn't worth it.. Is he correct? Is it worth it? Are the standard shafts that inconsistent or different?

My S300's are the standard weight matched shafts that were then frequency matched. The "step" varies slightly from club to club but that's how it works. I wonder how TT frequency matches the Tour Issue shafts? Do they trim them to hit a certain frequency or just group alike frequencies? Either way, my weight matched shafts are frequency matched.

Hmm, that post was slightly confusing... X matched, Y matched... Whatever, they ALL play to the exact flex that I want.

I read about frequency matching and puring and spining a few weeks ago on assorted golf blogs. This evening, however, I could only locate one.

http://www.ralphmaltby.com/forum/art...e=11#number179 The jist of this article is: The high end club makers and OEM manufacturers have such high quality control standards these days, it doesn't help that much. If anyone else knows more about this, please share.

So wait, you can get them frequency matched after you buy them? I thought it was a similarity thing out of the box. So if one shaft is not similar you throw it out. But it reads like they can do something to it to match the frequency??

I'm not sure that would be offensive to him considering he was summarizing the article and not giving his knowledge/opinion. In my opinion, I don't think big OEM manufacturers have

poor quility control. That being said, can you get the shafts you already own frequency matched? If so, is it worth it?

It's all in how you trim them. That's why the steps will/can be uneven. Place a set of OTR clubs against the wall keeping the heads in alignment and look at the first "step" on the shaft, you'll notice that they all increase by roughly 1/2". When you frequency match the clubs by varying the shaft trim, these steps will not remain consistent (in most cases, they'll be pretty close though).

I'll try to get a pic of both. It's much easier to understand what's going on in pictures.

So is it possible to get irons frequency matched and still have your irons +.5'' over standard length? It sounds like it is one or the other if I read that correctly.

Yes, you trim the tip for flex and the butt for length. Work with a quality club builder, this will be no problem for them. Shoot me an IM if you want the name/number of the guy that I use (he's in OH).

Ohh, I guess I missed the part about tip trimming for frequency matching. Good to know I can still get them done if I want.

What does he usually charge for a set or per club?

For the rest of us reading this thread-

only an experienced clubfitter/maker can frequency match a set of clubs and , yes, your existing set MAY be done. Just depends on whether you're going stiffer. They can only be trimmed to get stiffer. Adding length does NOT make them softer/ more flexible.
The bottom line is to go to a clubfitter/maker and get it done right the first time!
