Aldila NV 60 Proto "by you"

I have a question that is plaguing me. My normal driver is a Callaway FT-IQ, 9 degree, with a UST V2 Pro Force regular flex shaft. My swing speed is between 92-96 mph. My tempo is smooth...not herky jerky. I got this wild hair up my butt to experiment. I bought a friends FT-IQ 10 degree loft driver, and replaced the worthless Fujikura shaft in it with a Aldila VS 60 Proto "By You" shaft in a regular flex. I got it all put together last night and proceeded to the course today to try it out.

It was an extremely windy day in west central Florida...wind at around 20-30 mph, so this was not a true test of the clubs performance. Plus the rest of my game sucked today...so who knows what it really could have done...but here is the question.
I have heard that the NV Proto plays stiff. I bought the 60 series..not 65...and it states that the swing speed should be 90-100 to play a regular flex. All the web sites state that unless you really load up on this shaft, that it robs you of distance. Again, I really couldn't say for sure due to weather conditions but I noticed the following characteristics.

On my UST shafted club , I play the ball even with my arch on the left foot just inside the front toe. It seemed that the only flaw that I had with that shaft is an occasional fade to damn near a small slice as I got a bit more tired. T he VS Proto shafted club, with the ball played in the same location seemed to yank left...straight as an arrow. Only ONCE...when I know for a fact that I left my hips open, did the ball slice. A definite swing flaw. I started playing the ball back about an inch or two in my stance and the ball seemed to straighten out quite a bit. What characteristics of this shaft/loft combo make the ball position and flight seem so different. I started experimenting with the 10 degree loft because I heard that more height...more carry...more distance. However, it seemed as if the distance was a little more zapped with the VS PROTO. Is the shaft too advanced for my swing speed and tempo? Again...it was a windy day in Tampa Bay..so it may be premature to even ask..but just fishing for comments.

By the way...not only did I play like crap...the Vikings lost. My man Brett Favre choked in the final minute. I think I'll go stick my head in the toilet.

Well having been in your situation a few days ago, I can say that the UST V2 for me is not good. It felt very blah! Everthing I hit with it was a slice, not to mention that they were about 210 / 220 yards. I tried the new UST axis shaft on same nike head 5900 and I did not like it either. I had alot of slice with it too....the V2 wast stiff, and Axis was reg. Neither one of these drives got me aobve 235.

I was on my way to get my r7 CBG Max reshafted with the NV65 which seemed to match my charactestics well. This was my second choice ($55 at golf galaxy). My first choice was the Matrix Ozik X-Con 6, but at $300 you can imagine how i did not jump at it. I ended buying the r7 Limited in my sig...I used it yesterday for the first time and I had the best fairway performace ever...8 out of 14 fairways, that was a record for me. Not to mention that I too live in South Florida where I had gusts of 25 mph, and average winds of 18 mph. Few slices due to bad setup and swings, and the hooks were due to wind! I was driving 250 / 260 consistently, something I had lost with my CBG Max.

I got my butt whooped this last weekend...so I'm pushing my brother in law to give me a chance at redemption during the week. He asked if one butt whooping wasn't enough. I replied with a &%$#@ you! I AM GOING TO MAKE THIS SHAFT WORK!!!!!!!!! I WILL BEAT THE SNOT OUT OF HIM THIS WEEK!!! Repeat after me...you will play well...you will play well!

Remember that golf is a game about confidence...you could be playing 1920's set of clubs, but if you are confident that you will play better, you will!!!!!

Just ran you're numbers through my trajectory profiler and at 95mph swingspeed with a 9* driver you'd need to swing upward at about 10* more to achieve the necessary 18* launch angle to pick up an additional 10 to 15 yards more carry (this is assuming you swing straight thru the ball and not upward). Before you spend any more money on shafts I highly recommend you seriously look toward a more lofted driver (12* or more). The added loft will have more affect on carry distance than shaft flex.
As far as overall club length- longer clubs can mean longer drives, to a point. You might find that a shorter (let's say 44" or less) overall length might actually work better for you as far as overall driver distance and accuracy. I swing my 44", 9.5* drivers at 110mph on average with consistant distance and accuracy. Anything longer and I'm losing it all over the place. It's not just the shaft that matters, it's matching loft and shaft flex with your swingspeed/tempo/wrist release than makes the fit.
Find an experienced clubfitter in your area and you'll never buy anywhere else.
