I have never used or seen anything other than a SG5, and I like it.

I have a Sky Caddie SG3, love it, but I'd like to take it to the range and "map my own course" so I can know the distances to the markers... does anybody know if this is possible?

By the way I love this unit, they should make them operate a little faster, maybe newer ones do but still. The drawback to all of the sky caddies that i have seen is the limitation on the number of courses... When I go on a vacation I have to take my computer just to add the course to the device... Seriously how expensive is memory these days?

I am sure that they will fix this soon, but it is a huge oversight in my mind...

It really depends on what you want your GPS to do for you...if all your looking for is yardages to help speed up play I suggest the Sky Caddie SG2.5...it is one of the cheaper models and does everything you need it to do. I love mine as I still want to try and make the shots and figure out how to play the slope etc...so all I need is yardages so I don't have to walk it off or go searching for sprinkler heads...but again it all depends on what you are looking for it to do for your game...good luck...

I purchased a Sonocaddie and thought it did exactly what it said it would do. However, even with this GPS, I continually asked my playing partner for distances to the pin. Needless to say, I returned the Sonocaddie and purchased a Bushnell 1600 laser range finder. I much prefer to have the Bushnell than a GPS. I have actually downloaded a GPS app to my iphone, as others have suggested, but don't use it much. I feel lost without my Bushnell. All personal preference, but certainly worth consideration. Hey, go buy both a GPS and a range finder and return the one you don't like as much.

I use my iPhone with GolfShot and I love it. I also own and like the View Ti app, but GolfShot's layup targets, statistics tracking, and overall slick graphics wins my preference.

    • There's no such thing as the spirit of the rule. And, you do realize how insanely small the time window and the level of water is for water to come up with one person standing there but not another person, right? It's basically never going to actually happen like that. There are lots of rules like this: a 7' tall person's knee height drop is from higher up than a 4' tall junior's drop. Their driver is also longer, so they get a larger relief area. What are you gonna do? Beyond that, my reply to you is the same as @DaveP043's: write a better one. This one is easy to understand and enforce. The penalty for playing from a wrong place is two strokes, so no, it's not significant. In that sense, the potential advantage must be > 2 strokes. No, it's not "irrespective of it." That's why the penalty exists. If it's significant, it's a DQ, which is the ultimate penalty. See above. They don't need to judge that. No, he didn't. He could have taken one stroke to drop in the same place. This was already stated. Instead, he paid two. Of course they do.
    • Yes, a ball going faster will go farther… but it's nearly impossible for "all other parameters" to remain the same. "A ball going faster with the same of everything else will go farther" is pretty rudimentary stuff. The entire swing. The handle moves the whole time. The golf swing is a matter of both translational and rotational forces. And yet it's also kicked out a little, as it's not directly behind the motion of the hand path at that instant.
    • bought a used epic driver 3 years ago treated me well i am 72 bought with senior shaft a friend of bought a brand new  ping 440 claims he hits straighter and added 10 to 15 yards on his drive i know drivers are the most frequent club bought is a new driver that much better
    • It's true that it is not always clear where to draw the line of "significant". But I would argue that saving half a stroke or more is definitely more than significant. According to the common meaning of "significant", which is all we have because the word is not defined elsewhere in the rules.  This is irrespective of the two stroke penalty for playing from a wrong place. That penalty is only for when there was no significant advantage.  And it is possible to tell to some certainty whether a stroke or half a stroke was saved by such tools as strokes-gained, experience of officials, etc. Applying the conditions listed in the definition of serious breach.  In the example in which a player gave themselves free relief from a boundary object, if relief was necessary, then that wrong place gave a significant advantage.  Though apparently there is some sort of verbal tradition that tournament officials have a higher standard of what they consider "significant". Much higher than one stroke. And they like to take into account that the player already received a two-stroke penalty, though that is not in the rules for determining what is a "significant advantage".
