I got fitted for clubs and they told me that I have a swing speed of 110-115. While looking to replace my 4 iron with a hybrid... i noticed that the current fairway woods (burner high launch) are for slow swing speeds. Should I switch to "tour" or R9?

I'm sure there is a clubfitter in your area that can help you with your decision. With that kind of swing speed you're looking for S and X flex shafts that have firm tips. Try a few on the range and course and when you find the one that works buy THAT CLUB (not another new one like it but THAT CLUB that you just hit). Other than that, getting fitted by a clubfitter is the best idea.

With your swing speed, make sure you get the right shaft for the shot shape you want - probably something with midkick or highkick. (RE: kickpoint/flexpoint, a low KP helps get ball up, while a high KP helps keep the ball low.) Shaft is just as important as the clubhead.

@Tweaky - I did go to a club fitter and this is what he gave me. The thing I find off is that he recommended 2008 fairway high launch burners and 2009 Burner driver. Both of these clubs are for a low swing speed. (looking at information from TM website). And, I did try a R9 TP driver (my friends) and I was hitting that club pretty well. So, this is what caused me to look into high swing speed clubs.

@WUTiger and TinCupTampa - This is where my question truly lays. If I switch to a R9 driver, the standard R9 460 driver comes with an Aldila re-ax 60 versus the TP version comes with Aldila voodoo SVS6 shaft. Im attempting to read more on what constitutes a heavier gram shaft versus which shaft is best?

That is an awesome swing speed.

His recomendations sound pretty weak. I would perhaps go somewhere else.

Was this an independent clubfitter or one who works at a retail store? Check their credentials for the training they received. Not everyone who works in retail has had actual classroom and hands on training and tested for quality of service.

Does he/she test shafts using a frequency machine or an NF1/2/3/4? If they don't and you don't know what these are then keep looking for a clubfitter who does. BTW checking my test results from a TM REAX 65S I pulled from a TP Burner driver shows that it is more of an X flex so that would make me believe that it's likely the R flex would play like a stiffer than average S flex shaft. It might actually be a good match for you. Try it if you can just for S & Gs. (sh!!t$ and giggles as we say). I'm building a Nak 9* driver with a YS6X tipped to 327cpm for a guy who has a 110mph swing speed. From experience and the data base this profile will work for him. Wish I could work face to face with ya on this cuz I enjoy the challenge! BTW- I disagree with TinCup as far as shaft being more important. The first thing to find when fitting for driver is to match the driver loft to the swingspeed and angle of attack THEN fine tune with the shaft. This can be substantiated by others with far more experience than us. Sorry Tin, didn't mean to step on yer putting line!

@Bruce - I normally hit a slice but lately Ive switched to a "strong" grip and now I keep hitting a bit to the left. (Im right handed.) Im still a beginning golfer and I have some things to work on... downswing before moving my body forward and trying to get rid of that out to in swing. But, out of every 10 balls I might hit 2 fades and the rest are straight or to the left.

@tweaky - Im sure he is a qaulified. He is the clubfitter for Roger Dunn. How qualified he is... Im not sure. I did pull the trigger and purchased a R9 460 driver with an Aldila re-ax 60 shaft with a R9 3 wood with a Motore 70 gram shaft. Im hitting the driver really well. I didnt want to pay the extra 150 for a TP driver for the voodoo shaft so I am hoping the Aldila 60 is good enough.

    • I work with a lot of golfers who want more shaft lean at impact, who currently have AoAs that range from +2° to -2°, and who love to see the handle lower and more "in front of their trail thigh" from face-on at P6. And a lot of these golfers try to solve the issue by working on the downswing. They do something to drag the handle forward. Or they just leave their right thigh farther back so the same handle location "looks" farther forward. Or they move the ball back in their stance. Or they push themselves down into the ground to get the handle lower and increase (decrease?) their AoA (to be more negative). The real fix is often to get wider in the backswing. To do LESS in the backswing. To hinge less, fold the trail arm less, abduct the trail arm less. I had a case of this over the weekend. Before, the player had 110° of trail elbow bend, "lifted" his trail humerus only a few degrees, etc. The club traveled quite a bit around him, and he tended to "pick" the ball from the fairways. In the "after" swings below (which are mild exaggerations — this golfer does not need to end up at < 70° of elbow bend. These were slower backswings with "hit it as hard as you normally would" intent downswings), you can see that he bent his elbow about 70° instead of 110° and lifted his right arm an extra ~15° or more. You can't see how much less this moved his hands across his chest (right arm abduction), but it was also decreased. His hands stayed more "in front of" his right shoulder rather than traveling "beside" them so much. The two swings look like this: The change at P6, without talking about the downswing one little bit (outside of him telling me that he tends to pick the ball), is remarkable: Without 110° of elbow bend to get out (which he gets to 80°, a loss of 30°), the golfer actually loses slightly less elbow bend (70 - 50 = 20), but delivers 30° less elbow bend, lowering the handle and letting the elbow get "in front of" the rib cage… because it never got "behind" or "beside" the rib cage. If you look at this video showing the before/afters of P6, you'll note the handle location (both vertically and horizontally) and the shoulders (the ball is in the same place in these frames). This golfer's path was largely unaffected (still pretty straight into the ball, < 3° path and often < 1.5°), but his AoA jumped to -5° ± 2°. I've always said, and in talking with other instructors they agree and feel similarly, that we spend a lot of time working on the backswing. This is another example of why.
    • We had a member of our senior club who developed a mental block on pulling the trigger. I played with him to see what the membership was talking about. I timed him a few times when he would get over the ball. 45 seconds. He knew he had a mental block and would chide himself, “Just hit it!” Once on the green he was okay and chipping was a bit better. It was painful to watch him struggle. Our “bandaid” was to put him in the last tournament  tee time with two understanding players. We should have suggested to him to take a break from our tournaments. I agree with the idea that when a player realizes they have a problem, the answer is to go fix it and not return until they are able to play at an acceptable pace.
