I recently saw a few videos where pros talk about how they sand their grips to keep them tacky. Has anyone here tried this and if so, did it work well? How often did you have to do it? What kind of grips were you using?

I have Callaway Universal grips on most of my clubs. I like them, and they have no threads or fancy compositing. To restore tackiness, I wash them in a bucket of soapy water - use dish detergent, not some hand soap with greasy skin softener in it. Scrub them and rinse them in clean hot water.

The sanding might work best on grips with threads imbedded. But, wouldn't sanding quickly wear down the width of the grips?

Tour pros can change grips whenever they want, but us everyday people probably do it once a year.

That's how I see it. I have heard of sanding, but never saw it done during my years as a caddie. Any sanders out there with another view?

i sand my grips, gets rid of the rubber that gets a bit hard, then i do the dishwashing liquid, works great. i dont give it a heavy sanding, just enough to get that outter layer that is worn/hard

I sand my grips when trhey get too slick, but it only works with cord grips. I change tham after a couple sanding so they don't get too thin, though i hav no evidence that they do actually get thinner. For exaple, you could sand a block of wood for an hour, and how much thinner does it get? Not much. There really is not replacement for warm soapy water after a round of golf though. That way they never get slick.
