This may be a strange question. Would you continue to cast your iron if you can consistently hit it straight and accurate this way?

For some reason, i can hit a very straight and directionally precise shot when i cast the iron. In my mind, i just imagine using my arms to draw a big circle using the club. My pro has discourage me from doing this.

If i do it with the right technique with proper lag and weight shift, my ball is about 5 yards further and less precise directionally.

Should i continue to do the casting since i can hit very consistently? I do not hit any fat shot doing this though.

I wouldnt. If you watched yourself in slo-motion video you would probably find that your not "casting" the club as bad as you think. I wouldnt encourage casting the club anymore than I would encourage holding on to it (the angle that is). I have always thought a good impact position is a result of other things done well, not forcing your hands into a certain position.

It might work at a 18 handicap, but I would not want to cast the club when trying to get better.

I think people confuse casting with what I've seen called a "sweep" release of lag.

Look at this video of Jason Zuback's swing at 3:00:

Now, Jason employs this "sweep" lag but he doesn't cast. Casting is when you release nearly ALL of your lag early and you come into impact with the clubhead ahead of your hands.

I just wanted to clarify that point. Jason Zuback doesn't "cast." You can hit the ball quite well and far without achieving the Sergio-esque levels of lag late into the downswing, and it's not casting.

Cool video. Zuback seems to create his power with his hips and shoulders, as opposed to Jamie Sadlowski who creates a lot of power through a lot of lag.

Suffice to say, a video of your swing would make things a whole lot easier. Then you can see what really happens.

This is casting.
