When you setup to swing where does the butt of your club point to? I have been pointing it more toward my left thigh butt I'm starting to think the butt should point at your zipper or belt buckle?

Also, does where your club point affect which grip you should use? I see different grips...like all fingers...more angled in your palm...which do you guys use?

thanks!

I believe it should point to your belt line. As far as where on the belt line i think it differs between people. But mine is belt line just about the left thigh.

With most clubs, it points just to the left of my belt buckle. If im hitting a wedge i might have the shaft in a more vertical position.

No, thank you. I was looking for another piece of information to rattle around in my brain while I'm trying to focus on hitting the ball!

Thanks for the info. Most of my clubs are tilting more to the left & I watched a training video where the instructor said the butt should point at your zipper...so it got me thinking.

I've been pushing the butt of my club a bit to the left recently at setup. It was a quote, I think from Moe Norman, that I saw on another post about how the ball doesn't care where your hands start, and they finish in front of the clubface, so they might as well start in front too. I'm pretty sure either way can be considered "correct".

Hmm... Speaking of the butt of the club, at address most of us are recommended to point it towards our left thigh (For right handed), but where should the but of the club be at impact? I've always had a theory that you should almost swing the club to where the butt of the club was at address.

I wonder if that's a good thing to do or not.

Look at page 117 of the April 2010 Golf Digest........I was holding the club more like the picture in the top right (butt toward left leg)....but according to Hank Haney when you do that change the bottom of your swing & make it harder to square the club at impact. He says the butt should point at your zipper.

No, in this case, everyone is wrong and right. The butt of the club points at the center (I.E. zipper) with the longest clubs in the bag. The shorter clubs will point more toward the left leg. This has to do with the angle that they impact the ball at. A wedge impacts moving quite a bit more downward than a 3 wood, so you want it leaning further forward. The woods and driver should point right at the zipper, and will appear to lean away from the target a little in fact because your head is behind the ball.

    • Has anyone played the new Maxfli forged irons? For the first time in I don't know how many years, they have come out with new clubs. From what I read, Maxfli was bought by Taylor Made a long time ago which then took all of their ball making technology and patents in order to get into that market. The club business was left to whither and the reorganized company, now a part of Dicks / Golfworks / Maltby, is producing these new clubs. (Their Tour X balls which I play are really good.) Anyway, I tried them both out at Golf Galaxy. There's a player's distance iron (XC-3) and a blade (XC-2) and both feel really, really nice, almost "Mizuno-like" in their soft buttery feel and they're a bargain at $800 for a set. I'm planning to ditch my Titleist's and want to go back to a forged iron. I almost pulled the trigger on the Mizuno Pro-245's last summer, but a damaged tendon sheath in my finger combined with a back injury messed up my golf game so I held off. Now the Pro-245's are no longer available, soon to be replaced by the MX-15. (At twice the price of the Maxfli's...that's what got my attention in the first place.) If anyone has played with the new Maxfli's or just tried them out like I did, let me know what you think.
