I recently got new irons. After a fair amount of research, I settled on the MX-19s. I had a slight preference for the 25s, but on eBay new MX-19s were going for $100 less than average condition MX-25s. Considering that my swing is still inconsistent, I went with the more forgiving/less expensive clubs.

The clubs came in practically brand new condition. The owner had preserved the original box he ordered them in, the original sales receipts, the original plastic wrapping for the clubs, and the original foam inserts for holding them in the box. The clubs looked like they'd been used about a dozen times (which the seller had said), so they were practically brand new. I am quite pleased.

Anyway, my excitement aside, they came with brand new Golf Pride Tour Velvet grips. However, the grips were mid-size, and the clubs I used to play were just the standard size.

My hands are large. Only on occasion do I shake hands with someone with larger hands than mine. I can palm a basketball. So I had recently considered getting whatever new clubs I got re-gripped with larger than standard grips because my fingers wrap around a standard grip and back under my hand. But my clubs came that way, which pleased me more.

The moment I held the new clubs, I liked the new grip size. The comfort level was very different, and now I want to get my other clubs re-gripped.

However, here's my dilemma: I prefer having my irons and wedges with as thin grips as possible for the feel. Thicker grips feel more clunky to me. With mid-size grips, my fingers still tuck a bit under the palm of my hand and based on demo grips I've head, I would definitely fit the next size up. I don't mind playing with slightly smaller grips on my irons and wedges than what perfectly fits me because thicker grips feel like they make the club more distant from my hand, but I'm wondering if I should get the most perfectly fitting grips for my driver since there's less of that touchy feel that irons and wedges have.

Any thoughts on getting different sized grips for different clubs? I almost hesitate to get my wedges upped to mid-size, but I think it'd be better for me. Anyone here play wedges with thinner grips than their irons? Anyone play thicker grips on their woods than on their irons?

I personally like the same size grip on every club.

If I were going to run different size grips, I'd certainly have the larger grips on the wedges. Tour Velvet midsize grips are very low priced nice grips. You'll be glad you went with a midsize or even larger.

Hello,

I'm a clubmaker/clubfitter. I think you answered your question earlier in your post. You said that the new clubs have Tour Velvet "Midsize" grips and that you like the way they feel in your hands. I suggest that you have your wedges and your woods regripped with Tour Velvet Midsize. Based on what you said, you'll be very happy with the way all of your clubs feel when you swing them.

Take care,
Jay

Try an Oversize grip. With mits like those you'd be surprised as to how much better those will feel. I wouldn't recommend playing different sized grips. Stay consistant through out the set. What ever you do, do go back to playing STD sized grips because those won't help you out in anyway!
